Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has said Tottenham Hotspur’s midfield options will be “scary” once Rodrigo Bentancur is available for selection again.
Bentancur has been out of action since February, when he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during the 4-1 defeat against Leicester City, in which Tottenham’s fortunes also took a downward spiral with a disappointing eighth place in the Premier League, where they got lost. for the first time in more than ten years to European qualification.
New Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou has already renewed his first choice in midfield, with Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma preferred to Oliver Skipp and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, both of whom have had to be patient in the game in recent weeks.
The Uruguayan has already been spotted taking part in first team training and Postecoglou admitted last month that the end could be in sight as his return approaches, but stressed the need for caution.
He told Football.London: “Rehabilitation is the hardest part. Talk to any player, it’s not just the work, it’s the only thing that’s part of it.
Yesterday it was in turmoil, but it’s okay. It’s fair to say that he has quite a bit of work to do and it’s great to have him involved. He was obviously dejected when we had to get him out after half an hour.”
There will be many hoping for a quick return, but with such a serious injury there may still be a long way to go, but the end is in sight.”
Rodrigo Bentancur ready for Spurs comeback
With Bissouma and Sarr set to represent Mali and Senegal respectively at the AFCON in January, Tottenham will surely look to sign players like Bentancur.
Agbonlahor told Football Insider of Bentancur’s return: “It’s huge news. «In any case it is an additional option for Postecoglou. But I looked at this guy last season and thought, “This guy has it all.”
“He can play anywhere in midfield. He can play deep, he can go further forward.
“Some of the laps he did behind him were fantastic – and he’s fast too. “Postecoglou played against Sarr there and I think he will replace Sarr.
“Then you have a midfield of Bissouma, Bentancur and Maddison. It’s frightening.”
Bentancur was a very important part of Tottenham’s team before he was injured and it is vital that he is not brought back before he is physically and mentally ready, otherwise the consequences could be catastrophic.
A fit and ready Bentancur in the Postecoglou team alongside Yves Bissouma is a prospect worth looking forward to.
