Former Tottenham Hotspur star Erik Lamela is “intrigued” to see if a Spurs talent can factor into Ange Postecoglou’s plans.
It’s a pretty exciting time to be a Spurs fan as Postecoglou continues to captivate viewers with his free-flowing, exciting, attack-oriented brand of football.
When he replaced Antonio Conte, doubts existed over the Australian’s credentials given his lack of experience in Europe’s top five leagues.
However, the Tottenham manager has so far proven all the criticism wrong. Following their dramatic 2-1 win over Sheffield United on Saturday, Spurs maintained their unbeaten start to the new Premier League season with four wins from five.
In this period, Postecoglou’s team scored 13 goals and ranked as the third best scorer in the division; just behind last season’s three-time winners Brighton and Manchester City.
Yves Bissouma, Pape Matar Sarr, James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski, among others, have made a big impression with the arrival of Postecoglou, who looks to breathe new life into the club.
Spurs’ imperious form could mean some players will struggle to force their way into the first team; because Postecoglou seems to have found a winning formula so far.
However, some members of the squad have the potential to be part of the coach’s plans, such as young attacking midfielder Bryan Gil, who is currently unavailable following groin surgery.
The Spaniard has not yet played a minute for Postecoglou this season, also due to his injury.
Former Spurs winger Lamela told Spain’s Estadio Deportivo that he will be very interested to see if the 22-year-old can force his way into Postecoglou’s first team.
“Gil can play on any wing. I’m curious to see if he can make his way into Postecoglou’s thinking,” Lamela said.
Lamela further praised the midfielder, adding that he would like to see him return to Sevilla and join Gil. Asked if he would take over the talent from Tottenham, Lamela explained:
“I would like to do it because of the person he is. “He’s a great companion, I get along very well.
The former Sevilla star joined Spurs in the summer of 2021 with an excellent reputation, with Conte once even comparing him to Man City star Bernardo Silva.
“It was really important, you know, with Bryan Gil we are talking about a player born to play football,” Conte said in January.
“He understands football quickly. He is so smart, so smart to understand the situation. Then you know this league is difficult because you have to have good quality, be fast and have good endurance and he has that kind of quality.
“But at the same time, you have to be physically strong. I think Gil has improved a lot from last season in that regard as well.
He must become physically stronger. I compared him to Bernardo Silva at Manchester City because I think they are very, very similar.
Gil has also been referred to as a “wizard” and it will be interesting to see what role he plays when he returns from injury.
