Alasdair Gold says Spurs have a 21-year-old in their ranks which is ‘so exciting’

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pape Matar Sarr has been praised by Alasdair Gold, who believes Spurs fans will see a much better player in a few years’ time.

Gold states on his YouTube channel that the current Sarr is “the first version” and it will be exciting to see how he develops as a player at Spurs.

Sarr caused a sensation at Tottenham, became a regular starter and made a good impression in the Premier League at the age of 21.

On Monday he helped Tottenham return to the top of the Premier League with a 1-0 win over Fulham.

Sarr once again gave Spurs plenty of energy in midfield and pulled off a great defensive header as Raul Jimenez was about to threaten. Pape Matar Sarr ‘so exciting’, says Alasdair Gold

“Pape Matar Sarr, who only mentioned him briefly earlier, belies his age in every match,” Gold said.

“There was a moment where he sprinted out of nowhere to head the ball just before Jimenez got there.

“He is very tactically aware, he is very intelligent on and off the ball, and the most exciting thing about him is that he is not the Pope we will see in four or five years, but the first version.”

As for Sarr’s development, Gold isn’t entirely sure, wondering whether he will be a Patrick Vieira type player or someone more like Steven Gerrard.

“It’s a very good version, but we don’t know what it will become,” he continued.

“Will he become a truly breathtaking box-to-box midfielder who also scores goals? Will he become more of a defensive powerhouse?

“We really don’t know. He will be a Vieira type, how do I not know? Will he become more of a Gerrard type? Will he be someone who scores goals and bursts into the box to emerge in those big moments?
“Who knows, and that’s what makes it so exciting.”

Our point of view

Sarr has received a lot of praise in recent years, with numerous football figures praising the way he currently plays and looking forward to seeing how he could develop in the coming years.

For example, Fabrizio Romano wrote on Sportskeeda in 2021: “Many of today’s stars moved this summer, but this midfielder from Metz promises to become a very important player in the future.”

“The potential is enormous. Tottenham wanted to buy Pape Sarr immediately for 20 million euros plus add-ons.

This was great foresight on the part of Spurs, who now have an exceptional player in their ranks who appears to have an exceptional future ahead of him.
