10 October (Reuters) – Former Uruguay coach Diego Alonso has been named manager of Sevilla until the end of the season, the LaLiga club announced on Tuesday.
The 48-year-old, who left Uruguay after failing to advance past the group stage of last year’s Qatar World Cup, takes over for Jose Luis Mendilibar, who was fired on Sunday.
Mendilibar helped Sevilla escape the relegation zone and win the Europa League final against AS Roma last season, but they have struggled this season and are currently 14th in LaLiga.

Northern Ireland’s midfielder is left out of the squads for the games against San Marino and Slovenia.
Alistair McCann of Preston North End has withdrawn from Northern Ireland’s upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against San Marino and Slovenia.
With a calf issue, the 23-year-old will miss the two Windsor Park games. It’s a blow for manager Michael O’Neill, who also has midfielders Corry Evans and Steven Davis out injured, but the former Stoke City manager has decided not to call in a replacement for the double header.
O’Neill’s midfield options include Middlesbrough duo Paddy McNair and George Saville, Stoke’s Jordan Thompson, Southampton’s Shea Charles and uncapped Kilmarnock star Brad Lyons.
The Group H qualifier against San Marino will be played on Saturday (2pm), while the match against Slovenia is set to be played on Tuesday at 7.45pm.
