Liverpool are reportedly interested in Sporting Lisbon star Pedro Goncalves, while other Premier League clubs are also interested.
According to O Jogo, the Reds remain keen to sign the 25-year-old midfielder, who has often been compared to Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes in recent years.
Considered by many to be one of Portugal’s best players, Goncalves would be a nice addition to Jurgen Klopp’s squad, although there are already a number of issues on the table should Liverpool pursue a deal.
For starters, Sporting are not interested in the sale as Goncalves himself has a release clause of 80 million euros, a sum that Liverpool may not be willing to pay.Furthermore, according to the report, Goncalves will still not be sold if he leaves Lisbon, while Sporting will look to compete for the Portuguese title alongside Benfica and FC Porto this season.
Goncalves could indeed be a good signing for Liverpool in January, but current factors mean a move in 2024 may be unlikely.
Replacing Mohamed Salah is top of mind for Liverpool after what happened this summer, and while Goncalves could be an option, the winger might not cut it for the Reds.
The versatile attacking midfielder is clearly good enough to make the leap from Portugal to the Premier League, but Liverpool may be too big a leap for Goncalves.
Liverpool’s interest in Goncalves makes sense on paper, but for what the Reds need, the Portugal international could be someone the Anfield squad has to pass up heading into 2024.
