Atletico de Madrid star Rodrigo de Paul and Aston Villa star Emiliano Martinez praised Cristian Romero on Instagram after the Tottenham Hotspur star helped Argentina beat Bolivia.
Just a few days ago, Lionel Messi said Cristian Romeo is “the best defender in the world” after Argentina beat Ecuador to open World Cup qualifying with three points.
And on Tuesday night, the Tottenham star helped his country secure another win and a clean sheet, this time a 3-0 win over Bolivia.
Rodrigo de Paul and Emiliano Martinez started the match alongside Romero as the world champions picked up where they left off at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, although they were without Lionel Messi yesterday.
After the match, Romero took to his Instagram to express his joy at representing his country and getting another three points. In the comments section of his post, the pragmatic central defender was praised by some of his teammates.
“How I love that you take care of me, Cristian,” de Paul said, while Aston Villa number one Emiliano Martinez added: “Whoah.”
Romero is Tottenham’s main defender
Summer signing Micky van de Ven has made a brilliant start to life at Spurs, while youngster Destiny Udogie is also shining on the left.
But there is no doubt that Romero is the most important man in Ange Postecoglou’s defense and if they want to return to Europe he must stay fit.
If one of the central defenders gets injured, it will be interesting to see who Postecoglou turns to, with the possibility of Eric Dier, who has yet to play this season, returning to the XI.
Graeme Souness says the 26-year-old Tottenham is ‘much better’ than Jude Bellingham
Graeme Souness says Tottenham Hotspur summer signing James Maddison is “much better” than his England teammate and Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham.
Gareth Southgate’s England beat Scotland 3-1 in a friendly at Hampden on Tuesday evening, with James Maddison named on the bench after the draw against Ukraine and Jude Bellingham again starting in the middle of the park.
The Real Madrid star put in a standout performance scoring and assisting, but ahead of the match Souness said the Tottenham attacking midfielder is “much better” at filling that attacking role in midfield than the 20-year-old, as he revealed to Channel 4 Sport .
Domestically, many thought they would see Maddison playing behind Harry Kane for Spurs. But then he joined Bayern Munich late.
And although the 26-year-old made such a strong start in the attacking midfield role for Ange Postecoglou, to fans’ frustration he was deployed in a left-wing three for his country against Ukraine last week.
However, before Bellingham could help put Scotland to the sword last night, this is what Souness had to say about Real Madrid’s rising star and Maddison.
“I’m a big fan of James Maddison,” Souness said. “I think there is room for Maddison and Bellingham in this midfield.
“I think England now have a group of players that goes back to when Scholes, Lampard and Steven Gerrard were the golden generation.
I think these are too. I know they came close to winning a trophy. I think this is a team that should win trophies.
“You look at Maddison’s numbers, his statistics on scoring goals and creating chances, and you compare them to Bellingham.
He knocks Bellingham out of the park. He is much better than Bellingham when it comes to creating chances and scoring goals.
“He chooses Bellingham because he plays for Real Madrid. I think there’s room for two of them. If he (Bellingham) wants to surpass Harry Kane, then I don’t think he’s as good as Maddison.”
The Spurs have been waiting for years for this fast and dangerous playmaker to come into their building.
Maddison is progressing following his transfer following Leicester City’s relegation and in such a short space of time he is already a clear fan favourite.
Even though Kane has left the building, Maddison takes on that responsibility and is central to Spurs’ strong start to the season.
