At least until this summer, Tottenham Hotspur had long lacked creative options in midfield.
For a long time, it looked like Spurs would never be able to adequately replace Christian Eriksen after he left.
Apparently, Tottenham signed James Maddison this summer and he has been a sensation for Spurs.
Meanwhile, Ange Postecoglou also opted to keep Giovani Lo Celso in the Tottenham squad.
However, the Spurs boss may have been considering another option.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s performance for Denmark against San Marino led Danish magazine Tipsbladet to wonder if he could do a job higher up the pitch.
The Danes beat the Sammarinese 4-0 on Thursday in Euro 2024 qualifying, with the Tottenham star scoring the opening goal.
In the 26th minute, the ball landed on the edge of the penalty area to Hojbjerg, who fired a half-volley into the corner of the net.
Joakim Maehle and Jonas Wind each scored before half-time before Eriksen scored a comfortable victory in second-half injury time.
After the match, Tipsbladet wrote: “Did he just book a ticket for the national team 10 role? “If you didn’t know any better, after Thursday’s game you might at least think that Hojbjerg was a very offensive player!”
“His defensive qualities were not as sought after as usual, but he was still a boss in midfield and at the same time had a lot of freedom to move forward.”
“He recognized it with a great goal, among others, but he was also involved in Jonas Wind’s goal as the third from the last.
Apparently, the Spurs ace has only played against San Marino, the worst team in the world according to the current FIFA rankings.
You can’t draw too many conclusions from a game like this. Hojbjerg could afford to push further because their opponents were much weaker than Denmark.
Nonetheless, Hojbjerg showed he could play a slightly more offensive role. This is something he did early in his career, albeit in just thirteen league games.
Who knows, this might be something Postecoglou could explore further when the player returns to Hotspur Way.
