The biggest names in free agency have already found their new homes, but that doesn’t mean the market is empty. There are still valuable pieces available, and the Sacramento Kings, despite making significant moves already, could benefit from additional support at the forward positions.
Their notable acquisition of DeMar DeRozan through a sign-and-trade deal was a headline-grabber. Yet, the Kings still have one available roster spot and several tools at their disposal to sign more players, including the Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception, Bi-Annual Exception, and minimum contracts.
In addressing the Kings’ most glaring positional weakness, let’s explore six potential forward additions they could consider in free agency.
Gordon Hayward
While Gordon Hayward might not be the most natural fit for the Kings, given his current status as an offense-first player at age 34, his potential upside is hard to ignore. The Kings’ primary need is defense, an area where Hayward might not excel, but his low-risk, high-reward profile makes him an attractive option.
Considering the limited interest from other teams, Hayward could likely be signed for a Bi-Annual Exception or a veteran minimum. This would mean investing a modest amount for a player who could end up being a valuable bench asset or even a low-level starter.
If the Kings have an opportunity to sign him, they should strongly consider it.
