After scoring 50 points in Game 7 to send the Sacramento Kings home last season, Stephen Curry put Mike Brown’s men to bed again with a 41-point masterclass to secure the Golden State Warriors’ first win of the season.
In doing so, Curry joined Wilt Chamberlain, Michael Jordan, and Reggie Miller as the only players in NBA history to sustain a 40-point shutout play with another 40 plays in the following game against the same opponent.
Stephen Curry led the Golden State Warriors to a big 122-114 win over the Sacramento Kings at Golden 1 Center on Friday night. After leading by 18 points in the fourth quarter, the Warriors had to fend off a Kings fight, cutting the margin to five with just over a minute to play.
However, it was Curry who capped off his dominant night with a wing 3-pointer to put the game beyond doubt.Andrew Wiggins clearly had something to prove after a lethargic start to the season against the Suns.
He scored six of the Warriors’ first eight points and grabbed three rebounds in his first six minutes. In the first four and a half minutes, Golden State got off to a 13-7 run, but from that point on, the offense basically stopped.
That was especially true when Curry was sitting, with the Warriors scoring just 11 points in seven minutes with the two-time MVP on the bench.
However, Curry’s return rejuvenated the visitors, leading them to a long period in which they were able to overcome a double-digit deficit.
When Klay Thompson made a smart extra pass to Jonathan Kuminga for a corner 3-pointer late in the half, Golden State took a 60-57 lead. The Kings started the third on a 5-0 run before the two teams took turns in the opening minutes.
Curry then tried to separate the teams again with another burst, opening a double-digit lead for the Warriors with 16 points in the third quarter, giving him 34 points for the game.
Chris Paul made sure non-Curry minutes were no longer left behind, methodically orchestrating the offense while players like Thompson and Moses Moody took advantage.
After scoring 40 points in the third quarter against the Suns on Tuesday, the Warriors scored 39 more points against the Kings when Paul recorded his 10th assist without a turnover.
NBA Player of the Year De’Aaron Fox sparked a comeback in Sacramento with his 39 points that night, but in the end it was too little, too late as Curry fired once again no longer disappointed Kings fans.Curry’s 41 came on ridiculous 14-of-19 shooting, including 7-of-10 from three-point range.
The 35-year-old was joined by Thompson, who scored an efficient 18 points on 7-12 shooting, while Paul recorded his first double-double as a Warrior with 10 points and 12 assists.
Kevon Looney once again did an admirable job against Domantas Sabonis, posting eight points, 12 rebounds, six assists, three steals and one block in 28 minutes.
Youngsters Kuminga and Moody continued their strong impact off the bench, playing over 21 minutes each.
Kuminga had 12 points, five rebounds and a +9 in the game, while Moody continued his hot shooting with 10 points at 4-5 from the floor and added three rebounds and three steals.
After a historically disastrous shooting night against Phoenix on Tuesday, Golden State found its rhythm, shooting 55.2 percent from the floor and 43.8 percent (14-32) from three-point range. In contrast, Sacramento shot just 43.6% from the field and 30% from deep.
The Warriors are 1-1 this season heading into games against the Houston Rockets and New Orleans Pelicans that begin Sunday.
