FOR THE second time in a week, Collingwood has broken Brisbane hearts, this time with its women’s team toppling the highly fancied Lions by five points at Brighton Homes Arena.
Like their men’s team at the MCG during last Saturday’s Toyota AFL Grand Final, the women got the job done in dramatic fashion, overturning a 16-point half-time deficit to claim victory.
The 5.3 (33) to 3.10 (28) win was the Magpies’ second in a row and puts them back in the hunt for the top eight. In her 50th match, Mikala Cann was the hero, scoring the go-ahead goal from 35 meters midway through the final season.
But the comeback began just after half-time and it was captain Bri Davey who turned the tide, scoring a goal and creating another goal in the third quarter to breathe life into her team.
In the final period, Eliza James kicked an early goal to give the visitors the lead, and after Brisbane wasted a number of chances near goal, it was Cann who iced the victory.
Taylor Smith missed a close-range shot, Ally Anderson sprayed a set shot from 25 yards and Orla O’Dwyer failed to score from the right pocket as Brisbane lost for the third time in four games at their new home .
Davey (19), Brit Bonnici (20) and Sarah Rowe (21) all played key roles in the victory as Collingwood scored the only four goals of the second half.
Nell Morris-Dalton started the match with a goal from a quick counter attack by Collingwood.
But when Anderson got his hands on the ball in the middle of the field and Sophie Conway and O’Dwyer scored goals and produced great shots from the flanks, the hosts were ahead at quarter-time.
The Lions extended the lead to 16 points in the second period thanks to a Courtney Hodder goal, but they could have led by more if not for some wayward kicking.
Lily Postlethwaite and debutant Caitlin Wendland both hit the post, while Taylor Smith canceled out a precise kick after it came off his boot. The momentIt was supposed to be milestone girl Mikala Cann who won.
In her 50th match, Cann was already making a huge contribution with her 19 disposals, including 14 contested, and five clearances, but her biggest impact came with her passing.
After winning a free kick 35 yards from goal with her team trailing by a point, she calmly stormed back and scored the match winner as the Gazza’s hero.
