‘I heard it’ – Jurgen Klopp responds to Gary Neville’s ‘aggressive’ Liverpool claim

Jurgen Klopp responds to a question about Liverpool’s statement on the VAR controversy in their defeat to Tottenham.

Jurgen Klopp, manager of Liverpool, during a press conference at Anfield on October 4, 2023 in Kirkby, England.

Jürgen Klopp considers the statement released by Liverpool in the context of the VAR controversy with the defeat against Tottenham Hotspur to be “completely normal”.

In last weekend’s 2-1 defeat, the Reds were unjustly denied a goal. Luis Diaz’s first-half goal was ruled offside when he was clearly in a legal situation, and VAR referee Darren England was unable to overturn the decision.

Believing Diaz to be in on the action, England only quickly looked into the incident – and realized their mistake after play resumed.

Klopp’s reaction after the match was widely praised for the dignity he showed.

The following evening, Liverpool issued a statement saying they would “explore the range of options available given the clear need for escalation and resolution”.

The Reds boss has since requested a replay of the match, but has continued to show compassion towards the referees.

Gary Neville claimed Liverpool’s statement was a mistake, calling it “vague and aggressive”.

However, Klopp defended the Reds’ decision. Ahead of today’s Europa League clash against Royal Union Saint-Gilloise at Anfield, he said: “My English is not good enough.

For me, this was a completely normal statement. I heard some people thought it was aggressive.

“Of course we talk about it, we have other people in the club who set it up, and then the club goes all out and does the things that we need to do.

“The word escalation is not mine, I don’t know exactly what. it means. I know what that means, but I wouldn’t have written it in a letter, so that’s it.
