‘My worries’: Paul Merson says Liverpool’s missing player could already leave Chelsea

Paul Merson believes former Liverpool transfer target Enzo Fernandez was already plotting his exit from Chelsea.

It is almost 12 months since money-mad Chelsea shelled out a then British record transfer fee for the talented Enzo Fernandez after he helped Argentina win the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Many teams were interested in the Benfica star, including Jürgen Klopp, but the action-packed midfielder opted for Stamford Bridge over Liverpool.

At the time, the London club were still playing in the Champions League, but it wasn’t long before they exited that tournament and continued to struggle in the Premier League.

Fast forward to the present and not much has changed for the 22-year-old, who only took part in one Premier League win against current teams in the division, with Merson adding:

“I don’t think he’ll stick around.” as he told Sky Sport’s Football Special (27/09/23 at 7.35pm). It’s a damn fun read, with Paul Merson explaining why Enzo Fernandez was able to walk away.

Is Enzo Fernández leaving Chelsea?
“My concern would be Enzo Fernandez,” Merson said. “I don’t think he’ll stick around.

I think if he continues like this, a £100 million player and a World Cup winner.

“These players don’t want to play mid-table football. They do not. They have the money.

They want to win trophies. The important thing is this: winning trophies. Now they all make a lot of money.”we

Who will finish higher: Liverpool or Chelsea?
At the beginning of the season the goal of the two would have been to return to the Champions League after having shot themselves in the foot, some more some, last season.

But from this moment on it is those on Merseyside who are flying, with Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea struggling to score goals, let alone collect points.

All in all, you’d back the Reds to finish higher than Chelsea, with the points difference between the two already standing at 11 points.
