Liverpool-linked Bruno Guimaraes has reportedly agreed a new five-year deal with Newcastle United which will include a release clause worth around £100m.
The 25-year-old Brazil international moved to St James’ Park in January 2022, just months after a Saudi-backed consortium took over the club, and was instrumental in helping the Magpies end to their 20 years of exile from the Park and to finish the Champions.
League by securing fourth place in the Premier League ahead of Liverpool in May.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle have agreed to extend the midfielder’s contract, which expires in June 2026, but have included a release clause in the ‘region of £100million’, with the Reds and Real Madrid heavily linked with a transfer from Guimaraes in 2023.
.Speaking to the Anfield Wrap in August 2022, Reddy was asked what type of midfielders the club’s recruitment team are keeping an eye on.
“If there was a blank canvas, if availability was not an issue, it would be Bruno Guimaraes at Newcastle,” Reddy said of the ideal profile to join Jurgen Klopp’s side.
“Someone at [Manchester] City said the same thing: they can’t believe Newcastle got that deal. They think it looks like a bargain, and it already is.
“But despite the addition of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch to the Anfield ranks during the off-season, Liverpool are said to have had a £100 million bid rejected by Newcastle for Guimaraes in recent days of the transfer window.
That’s according to Spanish publication AS, who say the Reds’ offer was met with a “resounding no” from St James’ Park officials as the club prepares for their first Champions League season in two decades.
Fast forward, less than a month later, and the news that the Brazilian’s deal at St James’ Park will include a release clause has done little to reassure Magpies supporters that Guimaraes is in it for the long haul in the north east.
