‘Bought for so much money’ – pundit still refers to high transfer fee paid to Tottenham last year, not player’s biggest fan – Sport Witness
With two goals and an assist in five games, former Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn has posted good statistics since joining Ajax this season, but is still not the darling of the Dutch media.
The Amsterdam side lost 3-1 to Twente at the weekend, and while Wim Kieft talks about the team’s problems, some criticism is being leveled at the 25-year-old.
In quotes from Soccer News, the expert points out that Ajax paid Tottenham a pretty good sum for the signing and that perhaps Bergwijn should take some responsibility instead of complaining about others.
“But then Maurice Steijn and Bergwijn shout that something is missing in the effort. These guys have no idea what to do. On the one hand, because they are not good footballers (which both criticized), on the other hand, they don’t even know how Ajax wants to play football,” Kieft said.
“Bergwijn shouts after the match that he is done and wants to see passion. But he doesn’t touch a ball himself, man! It was bought for so much money… You’re not going to laugh at these guys and abandon them, are you? The big farewell began at Ajax.
In January 2020, Tottenham spent €20 million to sign Bergwijn from PSV. During his time with Spurs, he scored eight goals and ten assists in 83 appearances. The winger played little in his last season in London, but still enjoyed high prestige in the Netherlands. That’s why Ajax spent more than 31 million euros to sign him last year. This season they appointed him captain and this only creates expectations around him, even if there is no shortage of criticism from the local media.
