Liverpool might have won today and Cody Gakpo might have scored, but that didn’t save him from criticism throughout the 90 minutes.
Gakpo scored the Reds’ equalizer before being substituted immediately afterwards.
The Dutchman deflected Mo Salah’s cross to help Liverpool get back into the match.
However, that was pretty much the high point for Gakpo, who was criticized by Jermaine Jenas for his overall performance.
Jermaine Jenas unhappy with Cody Gakpo during Liverpool vs Wolves
Former Tottenham and Nottingham Forest midfielder Jenas spoke about Gakpo in the first half of the game against Wolves and made it clear how bad Gakpo had been.
Commenting on Gakpo in the 26th minute for TNT Sports, Jenas said that he felt Gakpo looked completely lost.
“Gakpo, I look at him and he runs around like he doesn’t know where he is at that moment. He had seven touches in the match.
“The last of all the players on the pitch. With someone like Nunez at least you know that he will make some runs in defense and help each other as a midfielder. But at the moment he looks lost,” Jenas said.
Of course, in the end, Gakpo will be happy to have achieved his goal. But as the game really changes with the arrival of Darwin Nunez, the Dutchman could well be worried about the date of his next appearance.
While Cody Gakpo scored the winner to put us back in the game, it’s pretty obvious that Liverpool look to be the better team when Darwin Nunez is on the pitch.
The Urugu isayan striker appears to be a serious threat and seems to disrupt defenses much more than Gakpo.
Of course, a victory was the most important thing. But while Jenas’ comments may have been a little premature,
Gakpo will be sweating a bit on whether or not he gets the nod in the next match.
