Davinson Sánchez leaves Spursnge Postecoglou has confirmed that Tottenham are still looking for a new central defender.
Spurs have enjoyed an encouraging start to the season under the Australian, remaining unbeaten in their opening four Premier League matches ahead of Saturday’s home game against Sheffield United.
However, for all their attacking prowess, they have conceded two goals in a game on two occasions, against Brentford and Burnley.
The club spent around £43million to sign Micky van de Ven and the Dutchman has impressed alongside a resurgent Cristian Romero, but compelling options behind the pair are few and far between.
Eric Dier was not involved when Davinson Sanchez was sold to Galatasaray, meaning the club will look to build on teenager Ashley Phillips, who arrived from Blackburn for £3m earlier this summer.
Ben Davies is another option in central defense, but Postecoglou has confirmed that the club “needs” another central defender.
However, it remains to be seen whether this will happen in January.
“We’re a little weak there, but it was a good opportunity for Davinson to get a long-term contract,” he said.“We had to rebuild the team – there was no point tinkering around the edges.”
“We probably need another central defender.”The Spurs boss added that Dier and former club captain Hugo Lloris, who did not leave the club despite his wishes, are still training with the first team.
Dieand Lloris still training with Tottenham first team“It was a pretty fluid situation.
We didn’t really know what would happen to Hugo.
“When we got to the end of the window, we knew what numbers we had.“They have already trained with the first team and are doing the same now.”
