Revealed: Tottenham on track to land £29m windfall
Tottenham will earn a guaranteed £29million if they qualify for the Champions League this season, Football Insider can reveal.
Spurs have made a strong start to the season, climbing to second in the Premier League table after winning three of their opening four games.
The North London side has no European football to look forward to this campaign after finishing eighth in the table in 2022/23, meaning all focus is on returning to the Champions League in 2024/25.
The prestigious European tournament is undergoing a major format change to the ‘Swiss-model’ for the 2024/25 season onwards.
It will increase participation to 36 teams and include a league format before entering the knockout stages.
Uefa are predicting a 33 per cent increase in revenue as a result of more games being played in the new format.
The Champions League currently has an income of £3.1bn, but Uefa expects revenue to rise as high as £4billion next season.
Uefa are also altering the distribution of finances, with a greater focus on participation money and performance bonuses.
As a result, qualification to the Champions League will now be worth around £28.9million to the 36 clubs – a huge increase to the £13.6million currently awarded.
Traditionally, Tottenham would have to finish inside the top four to qualify for the Champions League, but the Premier League may be handed a ‘wildcard’ spot by Uefa because of the recent success of English teams in the tournament.
This would mean that a top-five finish for Ange Postecoglou could be enough for his side to enter the Champions League next season.
