Conscious choice’: Why Vincent Kompany is confident Burnley’s intense transfer window will pay off

Vincent Kompany admits there is no magic formula for success in the Premier League, but he believes Burnley’s intense transfer window will give them the best chance.

The capture of Mike Tresor on deadline day saw the club receive fifteen new signings during the summer following promotion from the Championship.

Although the Clarets are yet to take to the field in the league, Kompany believes Burnley’s strategy in the transfer market will pay off in the long term.

“Just look at the competition, basically you find all the flavours. There are teams that have adapted and have not changed, teams that have changed…

“We want to move forward and I’ve seen enough of the team to know that we turn games into games and that’s what I want from my team.

“In every game there is something for us and if this continues, I think we will get enough results.

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany looks on before kick-off of the Carabao Cup second round match between Nottingham Forest and Burnley at the City Ground on August 30, 2023 in Nottingham, England.

“Just like against City, this was a game against a very good opponent, but there was definitely something at stake for us. Not enough because the result was not there, but we believe that the result will come with time.

Burnley now have a strong squad with plenty of depth, as evidenced by their 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup, in which Kompany made ten changes.

Despite the changes, the Clarets played in exactly the same style as their supposedly strongest team and deservedly claimed victory thanks to Zeki Amdouni’s late goal.

But even if Kompany is happy with the options now available to him, the desire to improve remains.

“It depends on the role of the manager,” he replied when asked if he was happy with the strength of the Burnley team.

“As long as there are teams better than us, we always have to see if we can find a way to help the team improve as well, anything we can do to make them better.”

“I feel comfortable knowing that we have built a solid foundation. Everything we add will only make it stronger.

“If we can’t make him stronger, it’s probably best to leave him as he is, unless another young player comes in to support the players who come in in the future.”
