And Liverpool star Endo played a major role in Japan’s historic triumph. The former Stuttgart player was Klopp’s least glamorous midfielder this summer – but he could now play an important role.

Endo was similar to Fabinho in his tenacity and ability to stop attacks and played a deep role in midfield. His performances have allowed visionary midfielders such as Daichi Kamada and Junya Ito to flourish.

An action-packed performance made Endo stand out at the Volkswagen Arena. The 30-year-old won the most tackles (four) and duels (seven), but was also the player with the most errors (three) on the court.

Two interceptions and six steals kept Germany from getting past the Japanese midfield. These qualities will come in handy in Liverpool’s biggest games of the season.

It was the kind of performance that made Fabinho successful on Merseyside. The experienced Wataru can hope to make a similar impact before his surprise move to Al-Ittihad this summer.

Liverpool paid just £16m to lure Endo from Stuttgart, where he signed in 2020. He previously had a traveling career in Belgium and Japan. But he could be Endo who is selected for the midfield role in Liverpool’s most important matches. His performance against Germany should show Klopp that he can help the manager revive the Reds’ Premier League hopes
