BATON ROUGE, La. – In a move that resonates deeply with LSU Tigers fans and the women’s basketball world, the LSU Tigers women’s basketball program has announced the appointment of Seimone Augustus as their new Director of Player Development. This homecoming marks a full-circle moment for the Baton Rouge native and LSU legend, who will now help guide the next generation of Tigers from the sidelines.
Seimone Augustus is no stranger to the LSU faithful. A four-time All-American and two-time Naismith Player of the Year during her college career (2002–2006), Augustus is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of women’s college basketball. She led the Tigers to three consecutive Final Four appearances and left LSU as the second all-time leading scorer in program history.
Following her collegiate success, Augustus was selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2006 WNBA Draft by the Minnesota Lynx. Over her 15-season professional career, she earned eight All-Star selections and led the Lynx to four WNBA championships. Her impact extended internationally as well, winning three Olympic gold medals with Team USA. After retiring in 2021, she began her coaching career as an assistant with the Los Angeles Sparks.
Now, Augustus brings her wealth of experience and passion back to her alma mater, where she’ll play a pivotal role in mentoring players both on and off the court. As Director of Player Development, her responsibilities will include helping student-athletes navigate their personal and athletic journeys, offering insights into professional opportunities, and cultivating leadership skills that extend beyond basketball.
“I’m incredibly honored to return to LSU in this capacity,” Augustus said in a statement. “This university and this program shaped who I am. To now have the chance to give back, to support these young women in their development and to help them reach their goals, it’s a dream come true.”
Head Coach Kim Mulkey welcomed the move enthusiastically, highlighting what Augustus brings to the table. “Seimone is LSU royalty. Her experience as a player, her leadership, and her love for this program make her a tremendous asset. Our players will benefit immensely from her guidance.”
The hire is also symbolic of the program’s commitment to excellence and legacy. With Augustus on board, LSU not only gains a mentor with elite basketball credentials but also a hometown hero who understands the culture, expectations, and pride associated with being a Tiger.
This appointment comes at a time when LSU continues to thrive on the national stage, following a national championship in 2023 and consistent Top 10 finishes under Coach Mulkey. Adding Augustus to the staff bolsters LSU’s ability to recruit and develop talent, while also honoring its storied past.
For fans, alumni, and the Baton Rouge community, Seimone Augustus’ return is more than a personnel decision—it’s a celebration of LSU’s heritage and a bold step toward its future.
