April 15, 2025 – Detroit, MI

In a tragic and unexpected development, Detroit Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan was found dead in his home early Tuesday morning, sending shockwaves throughout the hockey world. He was 57.

The news was confirmed in a joint statement released by the Detroit Red Wings organization and the National Hockey League shortly after noon:

“We are heartbroken to confirm that Todd McLellan, head coach of the Detroit Red Wings, passed away peacefully in his home last night. The entire Red Wings organization extends our deepest condolences to Todd’s family, friends, players, and fans around the world. Todd was more than a coach — he was a mentor, a leader, and a beloved part of our hockey family.”

According to the Detroit Police Department, officers responded to a wellness check request at McLellan’s downtown Detroit condominium at approximately 8:30 a.m. Upon entering the premises, they discovered McLellan unresponsive on the living room couch. Emergency medical services pronounced him dead at the scene. No foul play is suspected at this time.

Cause of Death Under Investigation

While the official cause of death has not yet been released, early reports from medical personnel suggest McLellan died in his sleep from natural causes. An autopsy is scheduled to be performed later this week.

“We are working closely with the medical examiner and respecting the family’s privacy during this difficult time,” said Detroit Police Chief Carmen Reynolds in a brief press conference. “At this point, there is no indication of foul play, substance abuse, or self-harm
