Oklahoma Sooners Football Program Undergoes Significant Coaching Changes……
The Oklahoma Sooners football team has experienced notable shifts in its coaching staff over the past year, aiming to strengthen its performance in the competitive Southeastern Conference (SEC).
Offensive Coordinator Transitions
In November 2023, Offensive Coordinator Jeff Lebby departed to become the head coach at Mississippi State University. Lebby’s tenure with the Sooners was marked by a high-scoring offense, averaging 43.2 points per game and achieving three games with over 65 points. To fill the vacancy, Head Coach Brent Venables promoted offensive analyst Seth Littrell to Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach. Littrell, an alumnus of Oklahoma and former head coach at North Texas, brought a wealth of experience to the role. However, after seven games into the 2024 season, Littrell was dismissed due to underwhelming offensive performances. Tight Ends Coach Joe Jon Finley assumed play-calling duties, and offensive analyst Kevin Johns was elevated to interim Co-Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach. In December 2024, the Sooners appointed Ben Arbuckle as the new Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach. Arbuckle previously served in the same capacity at Washington State University and is recognized for his innovative offensive strategies.
Defensive Coaching Adjustments
Defensively, the Sooners saw the departure of Co-Defensive Coordinator Zac Alley, who accepted the position of Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator at West Virginia University in December 2024. During his tenure, Alley contributed to the improvement of Oklahoma’s defensive rankings. In response, Venables promoted Todd Bates and Jay Valai to Co-Defensive Coordinators, aiming to maintain continuity and bolster the defensive unit’s performance.
Administrative Enhancements
Further strengthening the program’s infrastructure, Oklahoma hired Jim Nagy as the new General Manager in February 2025. Nagy, formerly the Executive Director of the Senior Bowl and an experienced NFL scout, brings a wealth of knowledge in talent evaluation and roster management. His role will encompass overseeing roster construction, talent acquisition, and navigating the evolving landscapes of NIL regulations and transfer portals.
These strategic changes reflect Oklahoma’s commitment to adapting and excelling in the SEC, as the program seeks to uphold its tradition of football excellence.
