Amarjeet Sohi, born on March 8, 1964, in Banbhaura, Punjab, India, is the 36th and current mayor of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Immigrating to Canada in 1981, Sohi initially worked as a taxi driver and later as a bus driver in Edmonton. His political career began with his election to the Edmonton City Council in 2007, representing Ward 12. He served as a Liberal Member of Parliament for Edmonton Mill Woods from 2015 to 2019, during which he held positions as Minister of Infrastructure and Communities and Minister of Natural Resources.

In October 2021, Sohi made history by becoming Edmonton’s first mayor of South Asian origin. His tenure has been marked by a focus on inclusivity, infrastructure development, and addressing social issues within the city.

In October 2024, Sohi initiated legal action against three Alberta residents—Varinder Bhullar, Bob Rai, and Abdusselam Huzeyfe Bezirgan—alleging defamation. The lawsuit claims they disseminated false accusations of corruption against him, leading to personal threats and vandalism of his property. Sohi is seeking $750,000 in damages, intending to allocate any awarded funds to combat disinformation and support underrepresented communities.

Throughout his career, Sohi has been recognized for his dedication to public service and his commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive Edmonton. His leadership continues to influence the city’s growth and development.
