Legendary Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson announces television retirement

Jimmy Johnson, the iconic former head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, has announced his retirement from broadcasting after a distinguished 31-year career with Fox Sports. The 81-year-old Hall of Famer shared this decision during an appearance on “The Herd with Colin Cowherd,” expressing that it was an “extremely difficult” choice he had contemplated for several years.

Reflecting on his tenure at Fox, Johnson remarked that it was perhaps the most enjoyable period of his career, surpassing even his championship-winning coaching days. He stated, “I had an absolute ball with my friends on the set. Best friends I’ve ever had.”

Fox Sports CEO Eric Shanks lauded Johnson’s contributions, noting that he was instrumental in establishing “FOX NFL SUNDAY” as a premier pregame show. Shanks commented, “Jimmy served as an inspiration to generations of football fans with his legendary swagger, one-of-a-kind insight, and signature humor.”

Johnson’s illustrious career includes leading the Miami Hurricanes to a national championship in 1987 and guiding the Dallas Cowboys to consecutive Super Bowl victories in 1993 and 1994. He transitioned to broadcasting in 1994, becoming a beloved figure on Fox’s NFL coverage.

His retirement marks the end of an era, as fans and colleagues alike pay tribute to his remarkable contributions both on the field and in the studio.
