Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel is closing in on a loan move to Tottenham

Welcome to the latest Tottenham Hotspur transfer blog as deadline day finally arrives! The January window will close at 11pm tonight as Spurs have just a few hours remaining to complete their transfer business.

Ange Postecoglou has already strengthening his squad after a tough run of results across Janaury. Kevin Danso has arrived on a loan deal from Lens with an obligation to buy as Spurs strengthen their centre-back options following the injury to Radu Dragusin. Antonin Kinsky and Yang Min-Hyeok have also signed for Tottenham during the window.

There is the possibility of more defensive reinforcements based on some of the latest transfer rumours. Chelsea centre-back Axel Disasi has been linked with signing for Tottenham before the transfer window closes, although some reports have suggested a deal may not be straightforward to complete.

There is also likely to be speculation surrounding the future of Bayern Munich striker Mathys Tel as the deadline approaches. Spurs have been linked with signing the 19-year-old, who is also reportedly wanted by Arsenal and Manchester United.

Another player linked with Tottenham in recent days is AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori. The former Chelsea star has been tipped to leave the San Siro before the window closes, with updates on the centre-back’s future likely to intensify as the deadline nears.

Away from transfers, Tottenham are busy preparing for the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final against Liverpool on Thursday. Spurs go into the game on the back of a 2-0 win over Brentford in the Premier League and currently have a 1-0 advantage over the Merseyside club from the first leg.

Stay tuned for all the latest Tottenham transfer rumours and as we bring you updates throughout the day.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, pundit Jamie Carragher has provided his thoughts on Mathys Tel opting to join Spurs on loan ahead of two major Premier League rivals.

“I think to be fair to the lad, if you’re getting the option and Arsenal or Man United are there you’d probably pick those clubs ahead of Tottenham. I’d understand that,” he said, before adding: “I think it looks like maybe Tottenham are getting him in loan now, so I think that is a good deal for both teams.

“He can have a look at Tottenham, Tottenham can have a look at him. We’re talking about a young player with potential but hasn’t played too much football at all.

“If he settles in well at Tottenham he’ll definitely get a lot of chances – they create chances, they score goals. For me, one of the most exciting teams in the league so for me this move works for player and the club. He’s not getting the minutes so it works for everybody.”

Postecoglou had a big part to play today
We’ve got a big behind the scenes transfer piece on Ange Postecoglou’s Mathys Tel chat which helped bring about the deadline day U-turn, the new leader growing within Spurs, the changes on the training pitch that are paying dividends for the club, the happy dressing room on Sunday and you can find all of that by heading right here.

It’s a huge shame for the young Romanian, who had become a key figure in filling in for so many games while the senior defenders were out and he was often the only natural centre-back playing for Tottenham. Just 22, he got criticism for some displays in a makeshift backline which were often unfair. An anterior cruciate ligament injury is going to keep him out until next season and that’s why Spurs have been trying to beef up their centre-back options. It never rains but it pours for Postecoglou this season.

Levy ‘must do more’ to help Ange
Chris Sutton believes Ange Postecoglou needs more support from Spurs chairman Daniel Levy.

“The one thing which has surprised me, and I know a lot of Tottenham fans are unhappy with Daniel Levy, and the owner, is that with their injury situation all season, and it has been all season, Postecoglou has said himself he needs a bit of help, some reinforcements,” Sutton said via Gambling Zone.

“That may be ominous for Postecoglou. I don’t understand why Levy did not help him and bring in reinforcements. Postecoglou talked about a real lack of energy.”

When does the transfer window close?
January transfer window deadline day is upon us with plenty of deals left to be done for many Premier League clubs.

All of the Premier League’s London-based clubs head into the window’s final day hoping to make some last minute additions, and omissions, from their squads as Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham all search for potential signings.

Tottenham have had an eyewatering £70million bid rejected for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi before news broke that Tel has flown in to complete his move to Spurs. After a slow start to the window, Spurs have added goalkeeper Antonin Kinksy and centre-back Kevin Danso to their first team squad this month.

Bayern on Tel
Mathys Tel is on the verge of becoming a Tottenham Hotspur player. Appearing to have missed out on the Bayern Munich ace after last week agreeing a £50million deal with the German club only for the attacker to turn down the move, Tel has now made a U-turn and is set to sign on the dotted line in north London.

football.london understands the structure of the deal is still to be finalised, although reports in Germany are suggesting that Bayern are currently expecting it to be a straight loan. Regardless of what the final agreement is between both clubs, Ange Postecoglou is set to receive a much-needed attacking boost for the second half of the season.

Disasi move ‘resurrected’
Tottenham have reportedly reignited their interest in signing Axel Disasi on loan for the remainder of the season. Spurs are said to have an existing agreement with Chelsea to bring Disasi on board for a fee of £5million.

However, Disasi has shown hesitance towards joining Tottenham, showing more interest in a potential move to Aston Villa, which led Spurs to consider other options. But now, talks have reportedly resumed according to The Telegraph and Spurs are making fresh attempts to persuade the player.

Tel position explained
Sky in Germany’s Florian Plettenberg has had his say on Tel’s move to Spurs.

“This is a very good solution for Tel, Tottenham and Bayern,” he told Sky Sports.

“He has reconsidered his decision. He was in talks with Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham. I’m convinced that in the end Spurs have presented the best project in order to get match practice. This is the most important for Tel.

“Now it’s up to Postecoglou to place him in the right position. He’s not a winger, he’s a striker. Let him strike, let him score goals!”

The Tottenham boss is understood have had a long chat with the young Frenchman, explaining his plans for the teenager and his brand of football. Ange Postecoglou was the one calling for a new attacker throughout the winter window to help his threadbare squad and now it looks like he’s played a key role in helping get his man. We’ll find out soon whether it’s on a temporary basis or with a view to something more permanent. Tel with his pace and direct play will certainly be a major help across the front three for the Australian with so many fixtures on the horizon.

Opinion: Why Guehi now Levy?
Tottenham have had a late bid to sign Marc Guehi rejected by Crystal Palace.

The problem with this bid, however, is that it is far too reactive and far too late. Spurs should have been proactive in their approach to transfers from the very opening of the January window and they have failed. Miserably.

Spurs have needed a new centre-back for the entirety of the January transfer window – and much before, though they could not do anything about it then.

Tel details
Tottenham look set to sign Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich on transfer deadline day with the structure of the deal still to be finalised, football.london understands.

The 19-year-old looked to have initially rejected the north London club amid interest from Manchester United and other clubs. However, with talks with United collapsing. Tottenham had continued to monitor the situation and made their move once again after initially agreeing a £50million deal with Bayern last week.

It now remains to be seen whether Tel will make only a straight loan move without the option to buy him permanently or whether Spurs can strike a late deal to include an option. football.london understands that the final structure of the deal is not yet finalised, although reports in Germany are suggesting that Bayern are currently expecting it to be a straight loan.

Ange talk
Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou reportedly had a long conversation with Mathys Tel to present his ideas and how he was going to use him. French publication Le Parisien claim that Tel changed his mind after the conversation and decided to join Tottenham.

Tottenham had a bid of £50m accepted by Bayern for Tel last week but hit a dead end after the forward decided to reject their advances. Football.london understands that Arsenal and Manchester United were also interested.

However, Postecoglou appears to have convinced Tel into a U-turn, and he will now be moving to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on loan, reportedly without an option or obligation to buy.

Guehi should be summer transfer target
Tottenham’s search for a new centre-back goes on after seeing a late move for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi knocked back. football.london understands the north London club enquired about the England international’s availability this month but Palace do not want to lose him mid-season, with reports suggesting that an offer worth up to £70million was rejected.

Guehi has made a huge name for himself in the Premier League since joining Crystal Palace from Chelsea in the summer of 2021, thus coming to the attention of a number of top clubs in the process after delivering impressive displays for the Eagles on a consistent basis. Newcastle United were interested in signing him back in the summer but Eddie Howe’s team had four bids rejected for the 24-year-old.

Guehi will once again be in the headlines in the summer regarding a Selhurst Park exit. A move away from the Eagles may well come to fruition prior to the 2025/26 campaign as the start of July will see him enter the final 12 months of his existing Crystal Palace contract.

More on Axel Disasi
Tottenham have ended their pursuit for Disasi despite previously agreeing a loan deal with Chelsea, claims the Daily Mail.

Disasi’s preferred destination is Aston Villa but Unai Emery’s side are not willing to pay the high loan fee set by Chelsea.

Facundo Buonanotte boost
Tottenham-linked Facundo Buonanotte is open to cancelling his loan with Leicester City, according to the Daily Mail.

It’s said the Argentine attacker is open to returning to Brighton who would then loan him out again. In addition to Tottenham, Chelsea are also keen on securing his signature.

Spurs have been long-term admirers of the player and it remains to be seen whether they will make a late approach to Brighton.

Leicester City midfielder Facundo Buonanotte will serve a one-match suspension against Chelsea after his yellow card vs Man United.

Gomes to stay
Tottenham-linked Angel Gomes will reportedly stay at Lille for the rest of the campaign before moving as a free agent in the summer.

The 24-year-old, who came through Manchester United’s academy system, has also been linked with West Ham.

While his market value has reduced in the final six months of his Lille contract, the Telegraph report that he will remain in Ligue 1 before making a decision on his future – rather than make a transfer-deadline day move.

Danso ‘failed’ Juventus medical
New Tottenham signing Kevin Danso reportedly failed a medical at Juventus just days before joining Ange Postecoglou’s team.

Danso joined the Lily Whites on Sunday from Lens on loan until the end of the season, with an obligation to make the move permanent in the summer. Amid interest from Wolves, Danso has instead headed to the capital and he will help add to the defensive options available to Postecoglou. Danso will wear the No.4 shirt at Tottenham.

But Alfredo Pedulla claim that Juventus were also keen on Danso before he joined Spurs but were ultimately forced to pull the plug on a move. It is claimed that Lens initially agreed to sell the defender to Juventus, but the Italian giants cancelled the deal after a problem came up during his medical. They are now expected to sign Lloyd Kelly on loan from Newcastle.

Romano update on Spurs
Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has provided the latest on any potential Tottenham transfer activity today.

“It’s going to be a very busy deadline day across the Premier League,” he said via Casino.org. “Tottenham are still looking for one or two signings.

“They want a defender and also reviewing the striker situation. We know that they wanted Mathys Tel, but that looks unlikely to happen now.

“The striker market is going to be really busy. Arsenal and Spurs are both looking at a player, while Manchester United and the Mathys Tel situation is going to be really interesting.”

Two Tottenham transfers Lange can seal
It is a huge week of football on the calendar for Ange Postecoglou and his Tottenham side. Victorious at Brentford on Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 win in west London, Spurs face two cup games over the coming days that could shape their season.

Travelling to Merseyside on Thursday evening to take on Liverpool in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final, the Lilywhites are then at Aston Villa three days later in the FA Cup. Before those two games come around, Tottenham have the final day of the transfer window to try and negotiate.

A very frustrating month for the club with Antonin Kinsky their only arrival prior to the signing of Kevin Danso on Sunday, Tottenham will want to get another deal or two over the line as they look to boost their squad for the remainder of the season. There could possibly be another centre-back arrival following on from Danso, with Spurs also requiring another attacker after failing to entice Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Marc Guehi bid
Tottenham have reportedly had a bid worth up to £70m rejected for Marc Guehi.

The Crystal Palace defender has been linked with Chelsea, having been initially sold to Palace by the Blues in 2021 in a deal worth around £18m. The centre-back has gone on to star for England at the European Championships last year, and has also been heavily linked with Newcastle United and Liverpool in recent months.

And the Guardian’s Ed Aarons reports that the bid from Spurs has been rejected, partly due to it being too late in the window for them to bring in a replacement.

Transfer state of play
Tottenham Hotspur enter the final day of the January transfer window knowing they’ve still got work to do.

Ange Postecoglou’s squad has needed bolstering for weeks but the first outfield arriving only finally walked through the Hotspur Way doors this weekend in the shape of centre-back Kevin Danso.

Before that, Spurs had moved to bring in a new goalkeeper in Antonin Kinsky, who secured his first Premier League clean sheet at Brentford on Sunday afternoon.

Disasi update
football.london understands that Spurs are not at this point pursuing a loan move for Chelsea’s Axel Disasi, who has made just four Premier League starts for Chelsea this season and has got most of his minutes in the cup competitions.

Spurs’ technical director Johan Lange will have other names on his list and further opportunities could arise as the day progresses.

The problem for Tottenham is that they are unlikely to want a long-term solution in the role with Luka Vuskovic arriving in the summer from Hajduk Split and that narrows their options for the position.

Spurs could hijack Man United deal
Tottenham could hijack Manchester United’s reported interest in Aston Villa’s Leon Bailey.

Marcus Rashford’s move to Villa Park has left them short of attacking options. A deal for Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel is said to be difficult, leading to interest in Bailey.

However, Fabrizio Romano reports that Spurs are now in the picture. The north Londoners are said to have called Villa to enquire about Bailey’s availability ahead of transfer deadline day.

Postecoglou could hijack United’s move for Bailey and leave Ruben Amorim without a new forward for the second half of the season.

Deadline day simulated
Tottenham have struggled in recent months due to an ever-growing list of injury problems, so Ange Postecoglou may be looking to bolster his squad for the final time this season.

The end of the January transfer window is almost here, and with transfer deadline day underway, Spurs could be tempted to bring in some new additions as they look to get their Premier League campaign back on track. Goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky was signed earlier this month, but with so many absentees, Ange Postecoglou’s side have struggled, sitting in the bottom half of the Premier League table.

Players in nearly every position have been linked with a move to Spurs this month, but if the Lilywhites were to make any last-minute signings in the January transfer window, who could come through the door? We simulated the 2025 January transfer deadline day to find out…

Spurs eye Disasi swoop – but it could be difficult to complete
Spurs have held talks with Chelsea over a loan move for Axel Disasi to bridge the gap to the end of the season. That said, according to widespread reports, the Blues defender has not been as keen to agree to the move as he would be a switch to Aston Villa.

The 26-year-old has made just four Premier League starts for Chelsea this season and has got most of his minutes in the cup competitions. While Disasi would provide extra cover, his lack of pace could be exposed in Tottenham’s high line.

So, the France international could quickly become four or fifth choice if Romero, Van de Ven, Danso and Davies are all fit, which means a situation no better than he has at Chelsea…

Tottenham are still a bit thin at the back
Spurs added Kevin Danso to their ranks on Sunday, but they still had to play Archie Gray alongside Ben Davies in the 2-0 win against Brentford, meaning a back four without a natural centre-back. Postecoglou is managing Micky van de Ven’s return carefully.

The Tottenham boss also admitted to football.london that Cristian Romero’s own injury has proved more problematic and a ‘slow healer’. He then said on Sunday that Radu Dragusin’s knee injury does ‘not look good’ and the Romanian is seeing specialists on Monday to learn the full prognosis.

That leaves Spurs still skating on thin ice with their centre-back options, even with the addition of Danso…

Spurs face Reguilon dilemma…
Ordinarily, Tottenham would be happy to let Sergio Reguilon go this month because his contract ends this summer, so any money gained or opportunity to save on his salary would be taken.

However, in the current situation, with left-backs at a premium at the club, Spurs might think twice about trying to push the Spaniard out of the door, even though Ange Postecoglou has shown no real desire to start him in matches.

The chances are anyway that Reguilon himself would prefer to wait for a more lucrative summer move as a free agent…

Tomori makes Tottenham decision
Tottenham appear to have been dealt a major blow to their hopes of signing Fikayo Tomori. The AC Milan defender has been linked with a move to the Lilywhites this month, as Ange Postecoglou looks to further bolster his backline before the January transfer window slams shut.

According to Sky Italy, Tomori has decided to stay at the San Siro after ‘advanced talks’ with Spurs. The report states that Postecoglou wants to sign another defender before Monday evening’s deadline, and the former Chelsea ace was one of a few options on his shortlist.

Tottenham have since signed Kevin Danso, but it remains to be seen whether the club will stop there…
