Roosters star ink $2m extension; Wallabies reject eyes NRL return — Transfer Whispers
The Sydney Roosters are set to secure their star halfback Sam Walker with a two-year contract extension worth $1 million per season, keeping him at the club until at least the end of 2027. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Walker has been recovering from an ACL injury that sidelined him for much of the 2024 season, but the Roosters are moving quickly to extend his contract ahead of the November 1 free agency frenzy.
Currently off-contract in 2025, Walker is free to negotiate with rival clubs after November 1. However, the Roosters seem to have warded off any potential suitors, ensuring the talented halfback remains a key figure in their squad. Despite persistent rumors of a return to the Brisbane Broncos, where his father and uncles played, Walker has shown his loyalty to the Roosters.
In an interview with Channel 9, Walker hinted that a contract announcement was imminent: “It’s getting closer. I’m sure there will be some stuff that comes out soon. I’m looking forward to it.”
This extension sets up an intriguing scenario for the future. Walker is expected to hit free agency just as the NRL considers expanding to 18 or 19 teams, which could boost his bargaining power and potentially elevate him to one of the highest-paid players in the league.
As of now, Knights star Kalyn Ponga holds the top spot with a $1.5 million per season deal, but Walker’s rising profile could soon challenge that.
