San Diego Padres Face Season Without Ha-Seong Kim, Surgery Set for Shoulder Injury

The San Diego Padres will be without one of their key contributors, as infielder Ha-Seong Kim is scheduled to undergo surgery to repair a small tear in his right shoulder. This procedure marks the end of his 2024 season and potentially his time with the Padres, as Kim is expected to become a free agent this winter.

There are a few steps to be taken before Kim officially hits the open market. The Padres and Kim share an $8 million mutual option for 2025, with a $2 million buyout. While this represents a bargain for San Diego, Kim is likely to decline his side of the option to explore free agency, especially given the attention he’s expected to receive, notably from the San Francisco Giants.

Kim’s looming free agency comes with uncertainty due to the upcoming surgery. In a typical year, the 28-year-old would be a candidate for a $21.2 million qualifying offer, but his recovery from labrum surgery may complicate the situation. While no official timetable has been announced, the decision to move forward with free agency suggests his recovery timeline may not fall within the 10-12 months that labrum surgeries often require.

At the plate, Kim has proven to be a solid, reliable player. Though not known for high-impact offense, he remains a valuable asset due to his all-around contributions. This season, he posted a .233/.330/.370 slash line with 11 home runs, 47 RBI, and 60 runs in 470 plate appearances before his injury. His defense and versatility, having played at second base, shortstop, and third base, have made him an essential piece of the Padres’ lineup.

Once he enters free agency, Kim is expected to be a major target for the Giants. The team is in need of a middle infielder, and Kim’s defensive prowess, combined with his solid base-running and offensive output, makes him an ideal fit. Additionally, there are personal connections that could make San Francisco an attractive landing spot. Kim is close with Giants outfielder Jung Hoo Lee, as the two were teammates in the Korean Baseball Organization with the Kiwoom Heroes. Giants manager Bob Melvin also previously coached Kim during his time with the Padres, further strengthening the ties between the player and the franchise.

While prior relationships may not be the sole factor in signing a player, they can open the door to discussions. With a need to fill in their infield and these personal connections in play, the Giants could be a leading contender to land Kim this winter.
