31-Year Treasure Hunt in France Comes to an End as Golden Owl Token is Unearthed

A three-decade-long treasure hunt, “On The Trail Of The Golden Owl,” has finally concluded after an official announcement revealed that the elusive token required to claim the grand prize has been discovered. The hunt, which captivated treasure hunters since its inception in 1993, was based on a book filled with riddles created by author Regis Hauser and artist Michel Becker.

Participants, known as “owlers,” had to solve 11 riddles from the book, as well as a secret 12th puzzle, to pinpoint the exact location of the buried token. The treasure hunt gained a cult-like following with over 200,000 players from France and abroad, sparking events and gatherings where enthusiasts could exchange clues and tips.

The excitement surrounding the discovery was bittersweet, with thousands of followers on platforms like Discord reacting with mixed emotions. “Don’t go digging!” read an official message, confirming that the Golden Owl countermark had been unearthed, much to the disappointment of many hopeful hunters.

The treasure’s prize, a replica of a 3kg gold and 7kg silver owl adorned with diamond chips, is estimated to be worth £126,000. While the solutions of the team that found the token are being vetted, the discovery brings an end to one of the world’s longest-running treasure hunts.

The original Golden Owl remains in safekeeping, while the replica, which had been buried in secret for 31 years, will finally be claimed by the successful hunters.
