Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone Inducted into University of Kentucky Hall of Fame, Reflects on Her Journey to Olympic Greatness

Four-time Olympic gold medallist Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone was recently honored by her alma mater, the University of Kentucky, as she was inducted into the institution’s 2024 Hall of Fame. The 25-year-old track sensation, known for her dominance in the 400m hurdles, delivered a heartfelt and inspiring speech during the ceremony, reflecting on her time at Kentucky and how it shaped her path to becoming one of the greatest female athletes of her generation.

McLaughlin-Levrone, who set a world-record-breaking time of 50.37 seconds at the Paris Olympics in 2024, shared personal stories about her experiences at the university, emphasizing both her athletic and personal growth. “It was here that I learned by watching other amazing athletes like Kenny Harrison, Omar McLoud, Leah Nugent, and Corey Carter, what it meant to be a pro and train like one,” she said. Her speech blended humor with sincerity, as she added, “I learned what true friendship looks like, and I learned how to do my laundry for the first time,” drawing laughter from the audience.

The lighthearted comment underscored McLaughlin-Levrone’s main message—that her time at Kentucky was about more than athletic achievements. She credited the university for teaching her life skills and shaping her as both a competitor and a person. “I will forever bleed blue because of it,” she said, expressing gratitude for the lessons learned on and off the track.

McLaughlin-Levrone’s 2024 season was historic, as her world-record-setting performance in Paris marked her as the first woman to break both the 52-second and 51-second barriers in the 400m hurdles. Her gold-medal victory added to her already impressive resume, which includes two Olympic golds from Tokyo in 2020.

The track star reflected on the adversity and growth she experienced during her time at the university, and her emotional connection to the school was evident. Sharing images from the event on social media, she posted, “Once a wildcat, always a wildcat! Definitely bled blue while I was here, so much growth and adversity that led me to where I am now.”

McLaughlin-Levrone’s journey continues to inspire, and her legacy at the University of Kentucky remains a testament to her incredible athletic career and personal evolution.
