FORT LAUDERDALE – Goaltender Chris Driedger is making a homecoming of sorts as he returns to the Florida Panthers for the 2024 season. Although he’s new to the roster this year, Driedger’s history with the franchise made the decision to come back an easy one. The 30-year-old netminder, who spent parts of three seasons with the Panthers from 2019 to 2021, is ready to hit the ice once again in South Florida.
After stints with the Seattle Kraken, Driedger’s return marks a significant chapter in his career. “It was an easy decision,” Driedger said when asked about rejoining the Panthers. “Florida was a great place for me, not just as a player but as a person. I had some of my best seasons here, and the team has grown so much since I left. Coming back feels like the right move.”
A Key Piece of the Panthers’ Puzzle
Driedger made a name for himself during his first run with the Panthers, where he posted strong numbers, including a .931 save percentage in the 2019-2020 season. His consistency between the pipes was a key factor in the Panthers’ rise during that period. Despite leaving for the Kraken in the 2021 NHL Expansion Draft, Driedger always kept Florida in mind as a potential landing spot.
“I have a lot of fond memories here,” Driedger remarked. “The organization has always been first-class, and the fan base is incredible. It’s exciting to be a part of a team that is competing for championships. With the talent in this locker room, I think we’re in a great position to do something special.”
Goaltending Depth for the Panthers
Florida’s front office sees Driedger as a valuable addition to their goaltending depth, giving the team options alongside Sergei Bobrovsky and Spencer Knight. His experience, calm presence, and familiarity with the coaching staff and system make him a seamless fit.
Panthers’ head coach Paul Maurice spoke highly of Driedger’s return. “Chris is a pro. He’s been here before, and he understands the expectations. His work ethic and commitment will be an asset to us as we move forward this season,” Maurice said.
A Familiar Setting
For Driedger, coming back to a place he knows so well has eased the transition. The familiarity with the arena, the city, and his teammates made the choice to return an appealing one. “It’s great to come back to a place where you know the ins and outs, and you have a connection with the fans and the staff,” Driedger added. “I’m ready to get to work and contribute to what this team is building.”
As the Panthers set their sights on another deep playoff run, Driedger’s addition adds a layer of experience and depth to their roster. Panthers fans can expect to see him step up when called upon, just as he did during his previous tenure with the team.
