Ireland Sevens Star Zac Ward Named in Emerging Ireland Squad for South Africa Tour

After a series of standout performances in Paris during the summer, Ireland Sevens star Zac Ward has been named in the Emerging Ireland squad for their upcoming tour of South Africa. Ward, the son of former Ireland rugby legend Andy Ward, has been on trial with Ulster following his impressive display in Ireland’s Olympic campaign. The 25-year-old wing is one of six Ulster players selected for the squad.

Joining Ward from Ulster are Cormac Izuchukwu, Scott Wilson, Harry Sheridan, Jude Postlethwaite, and Jack Murphy. Izuchukwu is one of two players in the squad who were part of the previous Emerging Ireland tour in 2022, along with Leinster’s James Culhane.

The Emerging Ireland squad, led by interim head coach Simon Easterby, will play three fixtures in South Africa. They are set to face the Pumas on October 2, Western Force on October 6, and the Cheetahs on October 9. Easterby, who is filling in for Andy Farrell as Farrell prepares for his role as British and Irish Lions head coach, will use this tour to evaluate the players in a competitive international environment.

Munster’s Alex Kendellen has been named captain for the tour, which the IRFU describes as a valuable opportunity for players to impress the coaching staff and adapt to the national team’s tactical approach. The Emerging Ireland tour has previously been a springboard for players to break into the senior team, with the likes of Jack Crowley, Ciaran Frawley, Calvin Nash, and Joe McCarthy making the jump after their 2022 tour.

The squad includes a mix of experienced and emerging talent, with players from all four provinces represented.

The tour promises to be a crucial stepping stone for Zac Ward and his fellow squad members as they aim to secure future roles in Ireland’s senior setup.
