Breaking News: College football player dies after collapsing on field days before his 21st birthday, family says
Palm Beach County, Fla. (WPTV) – A community gathered in grief and remembrance on Thursday evening to celebrate the life of Denali Smith, a 20-year-old college football player who tragically passed away after collapsing during a workout session earlier this week.
Hundreds of friends, family members, and supporters donned green as a tribute to Smith, filling the night with both laughter and tears. The outpouring of love for Smith underscored the deep impact he had on those around him.
“He was a true leader, he had a heart of gold, and never had a bad day,” said Latoya Mills, Smith’s mother. “He was the definition of positive.”
Mills recounted the tragic moment her son collapsed during practice at Wellington High School’s football field. Despite the efforts of those around him, Smith could not be saved. The cause of death remains undetermined, pending the coroner’s report.
Smith, who had played football for Graceland University in Iowa, was a former student of Wellington High. The day of the memorial service would have been his 21st birthday.
“I would like to thank him for choosing me to be his mom. That’s what I would like to say to him. I’m honored. It’s just an absolute honor. He’s the best human being I know,” Mills said through tears.
Those who knew Smith best took to the stage to share their memories of the joyful, driven young man.
“Nobody else could get you motivated, ready to play like Denali did,” said Josh Miloch, one of Smith’s closest friends. “He was a blessing. A big blessing in my life.”
Smith’s mother expressed solace in the fact that her son left the world while doing what he loved most—playing football.
The family has since started a GoFundMe page to help with funeral expenses, as the community continues to come together in support of Smith’s loved ones during this difficult time.
