The body of Chenoa Nickerson, a 33-year-old woman who went missing during a severe flash flood in the Grand Canyon, was found on Sunday, as confirmed by the National Park Service. She was discovered by a commercial river group on the Colorado River, and her remains were transported by helicopter to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office for further investigation.
Nickerson had been hiking in Havasu Canyon when the flash flood unexpectedly hit, catching many tourists and residents of the Havasupai Indian Reservation by surprise. Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs sent the National Guard, including a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter, to assist in the evacuation of 104 people from the area. Due to the damage caused by the flood, the Havasupai Council has closed the trails leading to their popular campsite and waterfalls indefinitely.
Nickerson was last seen on Thursday afternoon near the Colorado River Confluence, where she was swept into the creek without a life jacket. Her body was found approximately 19 miles downstream from this location. Her family expressed their deep sorrow in a statement to a local news station.
