US Open: Novak Djokovic aims for a historic 25th Grand Slam title, adding to his Olympic gold medal achievements

With a gold medal secured in Paris earlier this month—one that had eluded him in his previous four Olympic attempts—Novak Djokovic, now 37, has become only the fifth player to achieve the sport’s ‘golden slam,’ joining the ranks of Steffi Graf, Andre Agassi, Rafael Nadal, and Serena Williams.

In the final of the Men’s Singles at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Djokovic defeated Carlos Alcaraz on Court Philippe-Chatrier at Roland Garros. This victory now sets him on a quest for a 25th Grand Slam title at the US Open, which would surpass his current tie with Australia’s Margaret Court, who also has 24 titles.

Djokovic beats Alcaraz to win Olympic tennis gold

Though Djokovic had a challenging year, marked by early-season struggles, a knee injury that ended his French Open run, and a straight-sets loss to Alcaraz at Wimbledon, his Olympic triumph demonstrated his enduring capability. Despite his setbacks, including a dip in form and injury issues, Djokovic’s resilience has remained apparent.

Just three weeks after his Wimbledon defeat, Djokovic delivered a remarkable performance at Roland Garros, exacting revenge on Alcaraz and celebrating triumphantly. His success in Paris shows he is still a formidable force, even at 37, and he has indicated he may continue competing, possibly aiming to defend his Olympic gold medal at the Los Angeles 2028 Games.

As Djokovic prepares for the US Open, he faces stiff competition, including Jannik Sinner, who has been in strong form, and Alexander Zverev, a former finalist. Despite not playing any hard-court matches since his Olympic victory, Djokovic’s proven ability to overcome adversity means he should not be counted out.
