NSW Premier Praises ‘Brave and Heroic Act’ of Father After Tragic Sydney Train Incident

In a heart-wrenching incident that has left the community in shock, a father and his two-year-old daughter tragically lost their lives after a twin stroller rolled off a railway platform at Carlton train station in Sydney’s south on Sunday. The father, in a desperate attempt to save his twin daughters, jumped onto the tracks but was unable to prevent the tragedy.

The incident occurred shortly before 12:30 pm, when the stroller, carrying the twin girls, rolled off the platform and into the path of an oncoming train. The father’s heroic attempt to rescue his daughters resulted in his death, along with one of the twins. The second child was miraculously found unharmed by police officers who arrived at the scene within minutes.

The mother of the twins, who was on the platform at the time, watched in horror as the tragedy unfolded. She and her surviving daughter were taken to St George Hospital for assessment and are receiving support from friends, family, and the local community.

NSW Premier Chris Minns

NSW Premier Chris Minns, who resides just 100 meters from the station and represents the area as a local member, paid tribute to the father’s selfless act. “He gave his own life to try and save his children,” Minns said. “It’s a very confronting and sad day for the St George community and for that family from the Kogarah area.”

NSW Police Superintendent Paul Dunstan also commended the father’s bravery. “He’s just gone into parent mode and tried to save his two young daughters,” Dunstan said. “In doing so, it’s cost him his life. But it was an incredibly brave and heroic act.”

The incident has prompted discussions about safety measures at train stations, with Premier Minns stating he is open to considering any necessary improvements based on the investigation’s findings. A crime scene has been established at the station, and the incident is being treated as a tragic accident. The investigation will examine the speed of the train and how the pram ended up on the tracks.

The train involved was en route from Cronulla to Bondi Junction and was not scheduled to stop at Carlton station. Sydney Trains Chief Executive Matt Longland assured the public that the train was being driven with caution, as instructed, to avoid such incidents. “These sorts of incidents are incredibly rare, but clearly the outcomes are absolutely tragic,” Longland said.

Support is being offered to the train drivers, emergency responders, and members of the public who witnessed the distressing event. Emergency services have urged the public to avoid the area, and replacement buses were arranged for commuters as trains were halted in both directions between Wolli Creek and Hurstville.

This tragic incident has cast a somber mood over the community, with many mourning the loss of a father who made the ultimate sacrifice for his children.
