Kevin Costner Talks Career, “Horizon: An American Saga,” and Past Roles in Candid Interview with Howard Stern
June 18, 2024
In an in-depth conversation on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM show, Kevin Costner, the 69-year-old actor, director, and Hollywood icon, discussed his illustrious career and his upcoming epic, “Horizon: An American Saga.” Known for his timeless roles in sports dramas, Westerns, and classics like JFK, The Bodyguard, and The Untouchables, Costner revealed that his definition of success lies in creating films that endure rather than those that simply dominate the box office.
“What matters most to me isn’t the money,” Costner shared. “I love the idea that someone can revisit my movie long after its opening weekend.”
Costner stars in and directs Horizon, the first part of a four-part saga. This marks his fourth directorial effort, following Open Range (2003), The Postman (1997), and his Oscar-winning debut Dances With Wolves (1990). Reflecting on his Best Director win, he said, “It was meaningful because it showed I trusted my story.”
Throughout the interview, Costner’s passion for storytelling was evident, as he discussed everything from his training as a classical pianist to his experiences working with legendary actors like Gene Hackman and Sean Connery. He emphasized the importance of a great script, citing Taylor Sheridan’s “beautiful script” as the reason he joined the cast of Yellowstone, one of TV’s biggest shows.
Costner also addressed his recent exit from Yellowstone, where he played the powerful rancher John Dutton for five years. He explained that his departure was due to scheduling conflicts but didn’t rule out a return under the right circumstances. “I love the show, and I supported it,” he said. “But it has to be under different conditions.”
The conversation also touched on his experience working with Whitney Houston in The Bodyguard. Costner recalled how he chose Houston as his co-star over other famous actresses and how he coached her during filming. He also shared that it was his idea for Houston to sing “I Will Always Love You” a cappella, a decision that contributed to the song’s immense success.
In a surprising revelation, Costner discussed a planned sequel to The Bodyguard that would have starred Princess Diana. The project was in the works just before her tragic death, and Costner explained that he couldn’t imagine replacing her in the film.
Reflecting on his career, Costner shared that his big break came with The Big Chill, even though his scenes were ultimately cut. He also mentioned how he missed out on roles in Unforgiven and Schindler’s List, both of which went on to become critically acclaimed films. Despite these setbacks, Costner emphasized the importance of perseverance in Hollywood.
Addressing recent rumors about a relationship with singer-songwriter Jewel, Costner clarified that they are just friends and that he values their friendship too much to let rumors affect it.
Costner’s latest film, Horizon: An American Saga, is set to debut in theaters on Friday, June 28.
