Nick Kyrgios and Alexander Bublik openly discussed the difficulties they faced when playing against Novak Djokovic, both expressing how “crazy” and “insane” it was to contend with Djokovic’s exceptional returns and his uncanny ability to anticipate their shots.

In 2022, Kyrgios had an impressive run at Wimbledon, reaching his first Grand Slam singles final. His opponent in that final was Djokovic, who had already secured six titles at The Championships by then.

During the match, Kyrgios was on fire, delivering powerful serves and staying competitive throughout. Despite winning the first set and maintaining a high level of play, Kyrgios ultimately lost in a four-set battle, with Djokovic claiming victory 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (3).

After the match, Kyrgios received significant praise for his performance, with some suggesting he would have won if anyone other than Djokovic had been his opponent. Kyrgios remarked, “It’s just I couldn’t serve any better…”

Bublik also shared his thoughts on Djokovic’s skills, describing his experience against Djokovic in a 2021 Davis Cup match as “insane.” He highlighted Djokovic’s remarkable ability to read serves and be in position for returns, even during crucial moments. Bublik noted, “Every time there is a break point or something close to it, he plays… You just can’t ace him.”

Kyrgios agreed with Bublik’s assessment, emphasizing how Djokovic’s exceptional returning abilities were overwhelming. Reflecting on the final, Kyrgios admitted he might have performed differently against another opponent, stating, “I think if I played like Rafa or something in the final, I would have been fine.”

When asked if the experience motivated him, Kyrgios humorously mentioned he was initially emotional but ultimately found motivation. He concluded, “Yeah, it was right there. But he is different… He had what? 30 finals like… And that was my first. So experience, he was never fazed at all. He is so good.”
