“Each week presents a new tournament,” the two-time Australian Open champion said as she geared up for her second-round match following a bye at the WTA and ATP Cincinnati Open, the final major test before the US Open begins on August 26.

“It’s important to have a short memory. It helps me stay focused, work hard, and continue improving.”

Sabalenka, who has reached the Cincinnati Masters semi-finals three times, including the past two years and in 2018, is eager to enhance her record as she returns from a shoulder injury that kept her out of Wimbledon.

“Every defeat motivates me to work harder and make improvements – just to keep pushing forward,” the Belarusian noted.

“If you fight for every point and give your all in practice and matches, opportunities will come. You just need to seize them.”

Sabalenka also mentioned how tennis offers a contrast to her personal challenges, including the recent loss of her father and a former boyfriend’s tragic death earlier in 2024.

As she focuses on improving her Cincinnati results, Sabalenka emphasized, “I’m trying to figure out what I need to reach the finals. But my main goal is to take it step by step and bring my best game each time I’m on the court. If I do that, I believe I’ll be able to secure that semi-final win.”
