East Rutherford, NJ — August 10, 2024 — In the Washington Commanders’ preseason debut against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium, Dyami Brown made a standout play, catching a long pass despite tight coverage from the Jets’ Carrick Bernard-Converse.

Following their game, the Commanders resumed practice on Monday. Coach Dan Quinn labeled it ‘Tell the Truth Monday,’ where players received direct feedback on their performance and areas for improvement.

One highlight from the game was a 42-yard completion from quarterback Jayden Daniels to Brown. We examined this play to uncover the details of Brown’s route and catch.

Brown’s route involved several key elements:
Speed Release: He quickly gained leverage with a fast outside release.
Jab Step: A subtle jab kept the defender inside, preventing him from gaining ground.
Route Adjustment:  Brown bent his route inward to create space for the catch.
Catch Technique:  He used late hands and strong grip to secure the ball through contact.

Brown noted that while his speed release is instinctive, the rest of the route adjustments are deliberate to optimize performance at full NFL speed.

Quarterback Jayden Daniels also played a crucial role, deliberately setting up the play to target Brown. His initial looks were designed to mislead the defense, ensuring the deep pass to Brown was successful.

In Monday’s practice, a notable play involved veteran tight end Zach Ertz, who caught a pass from Daniels on an over route. This play, while eventually halted, demonstrated the potential for impactful connections between Daniels and Ertz in the upcoming season.
