Novak Djokovic was hit in the head by a water bottle while greeting fans after winning his match at the Italian Open on Friday. After defeating Corentin Moutet in his opening match in Rome, Djokovic was signing autographs when a fan accidentally dropped an “aluminum-type water bottle” from their backpack, striking Djokovic on the head, according to event organizers.
Djokovic immediately fell to the ground in pain, clutching his head, and was later helped into the locker room. Both local organizers and Djokovic described the incident as an accident.
Despite sustaining a bump on his head and being examined by doctors, Djokovic later reassured fans via social media that he was okay and resting at his hotel. He thanked everyone for their concern and mentioned that he was using an ice pack.
Djokovic, who has won the Italian Open six times, has not competed since losing to Casper Ruud in the Monte Carlo Masters semifinals last month. This year, for the first time since 2018, he has reached May without winning a title. In his match against Moutet, Djokovic won 6-3, 6-1 and is set to face Alejandro Tabilo in the next round.

Reflecting on his performance, Djokovic noted that adjusting to Moutet’s left-handed play took some time but he managed to stay focused and deliver a strong opening match.
Maintaining a sense of humor, Djokovic arrived at Foro Italico the next day wearing a helmet.
Looking ahead, Djokovic will aim to defend his title at the French Open later this month. He won his 23rd Grand Slam at the French Open last year by defeating Ruud in the final, one of three Grand Slam titles he claimed last year.
