Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba Visits China Amid Expanding Mediation Efforts

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba made his first official visit to China on Wednesday, following an invitation from his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi. This visit comes as Beijing aims to strengthen its role as a mediator in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

In his opening remarks, Kuleba expressed confidence that a fair resolution in Ukraine aligns with China’s strategic interests and highlighted China’s potential as a global advocate for peace. This marks the highest-level visit by a Ukrainian official to China since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

During the three-hour talks held in Guangzhou, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reiterated China’s commitment to fostering dialogue and peace. Despite the complex and evolving international landscape, Wang assured that Ukraine and China continue to uphold cooperative relations.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reported that Kuleba conveyed Ukraine’s willingness to engage in negotiations with Russia, but emphasized that such talks are contingent upon Russia’s readiness to negotiate in good faith—something that is currently lacking.
