‘Everybody is always doubting me’ – Remco Evenepoel Cries Out….

Remco Evenepoel Silences Doubters with Podium Finish at Tour de France

Remco Evenepoel has always faced heightened expectations. His early successes brought acclaim but also a relentless demand for more. Despite his victory at the Vuelta a España two years ago, questions persisted about his legitimacy as a Grand Tour rider. A truncated Giro d’Italia in 2023 due to COVID-19 and a disappointing Vuelta defense added fuel to these doubts. This summer, Evenepoel aimed to put all uncertainties to rest during his debut at the Tour de France.

Proving the Critics Wrong

As Evenepoel reached Nice in third place overall, he surely dispelled any lingering doubts about his capabilities. While Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard operated at another level, Evenepoel’s performance was nothing short of remarkable. Navigating the grueling three-week race without any major crises, he secured his podium spot with a substantial ten-minute lead over the fourth-place finisher.

“Honestly, this podium is one of the highest achievements of my career,” Evenepoel declared in his final Tour de France press conference. “Becoming world champion is still another level, but completing my first Tour de France and being third behind the two best riders in the world is a huge accomplishment.”

 A Journey of Emotions

Evenepoel’s tears at the end of the final time trial were a testament to the emotional journey he had undergone. Reflecting on his crash at Itzulia Basque Country in April and the immense pressure he faced, Evenepoel expressed relief and pride in his performance.

“Everybody is always doubting me, and I think from today on, that should be finished,” he said. “I’ve taken a step forward, finishing third behind the best two riders, with a big gap behind me, and being on a very consistent level.”

He acknowledged the weight of expectations from his home country and the criticism he faced even after impressive performances. The pressure, he admitted, was immense.

Looking Ahead: Olympic Gold and Beyond

Evenepoel’s successful debut at the Tour confirmed his potential as a formidable Grand Tour contender. However, it also highlighted the areas where he needs to improve to vie for the yellow jersey in the future.

“I think being third in my first Tour de France is already pretty good. That shows that the base is there to maybe become once a Tour de France winner, but for sure the gap is still big,” Evenepoel said. He plans to focus more on climbing and altitude training to bridge the gap.

Remco Evenepoel: „Z optymizmem patrzę w przyszłość”

From an athletic standpoint, Evenepoel’s podium finish at the Tour surpassed his Vuelta win. He noted that the level of competition at the Tour is significantly higher, making his achievement even more meaningful.

Before setting his sights on future Tours, Evenepoel has a more immediate goal: Olympic gold in Paris. As the favorite for the time trial and a strong contender in the road race, he opted for a conservative approach in the final time trial of the Tour to avoid unnecessary risks.

“I knew third overall was quite safe and second was unreachable, so why risk my life on pretty dangerous roads?” he explained. “I still have quite some big races coming up.”

Remco Evenepoel’s impressive performance at the Tour de France has silenced his critics and marked a significant milestone in his career. With a podium finish in one of the most challenging races in the world, he has proven his mettle as a Grand Tour rider. As he looks ahead to the Olympics and beyond, the cycling world will undoubtedly watch with keen interest.
