Phoenix Suns’ Summer League: Fresh Faces and David Roddy’s Resurgence

The Phoenix Suns’ Summer League action is drawing significant attention this year, thanks to the presence of promising rookies on their roster. For the first time in years, the Suns have legitimate newcomers, including Ryan Dunn and Oso Ighodaro, who are aiming to make an impact through these games.

Dunn, in particular, is showing potential to be a key player in the upcoming 2024-25 season, with his defensive skills being a major asset. Meanwhile, Ighodaro and undrafted rookie Jalen Bridges, who was recently signed by the Suns, have yet to establish their roles.

A notable surprise at the Summer League is forward David Roddy, who many did not expect to see. Roddy, who joined the Suns from the Memphis Grizzlies at the trade deadline, had a rocky start. His limited minutes were overshadowed by the contributions of Royce O’Neale, who was also acquired in the trade and has since secured a longer-term contract.

Roddy’s path to a more substantial role seemed uncertain, especially with previous coach Frank Vogel considering him as a backup point guard, highlighting the team’s roster issues. However, Roddy has used the Summer League to demonstrate his versatility. His presence in the recent game against the Golden State Warriors was unexpected but welcomed by fans.

At 23 years old and entering his third NBA season, Roddy has made the most of his Summer League opportunities. He played 28 minutes, scored 12 points, and notably, took eight three-point attempts, making two. This is significant given his career average of 30 percent from beyond the arc.

Despite limited playtime last season, Roddy has shown improvement in ball-handling and shooting range, indicating his commitment to development. The Suns might have encouraged his participation in Summer League to boost his trade value, but his evolving skill set could also make him a valuable asset for the team next season.

Roddy, drafted 23rd overall in the 2022 NBA Draft, has been known for his driving ability and physical play in the paint. His recent performances suggest he is expanding his game, which could help him secure a spot in head coach Mike Budenholzer’s plans.

The Suns could benefit from a young player with potential on both ends of the court, and Roddy’s Summer League efforts could be a key factor in earning a more prominent role next season.
