The Phoenix Suns are keen to strengthen their point guard position. Despite acquiring Monte Morris as a backup this offseason, they still need additional help in that role.
Morris might believe he can secure a starting spot, though competing with Devin Booker and Bradley Beal will be challenging. At 29 years old and having been with multiple teams, the Suns shouldn’t rely solely on him to solve their point guard issues. They also need to address the situation with starting center Jusuf Nurkic, which we’ve discussed previously.
One potential solution is a trade that sends Nurkic to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for point guard D’Angelo Russell. While this trade may seem unlikely and presents financial challenges, it’s worth considering. Both Nurkic and Russell are set to earn just over $18 million next season, so the Suns could align the salaries by waiving a player like David Roddy. Although not ideal, this move could be worthwhile to acquire a starting-quality point guard.
Russell’s decision to opt into the final year of his contract with the Lakers could be a step toward being traded. While his market value is uncertain and his tenure with the Lakers seems to be ending, he remains a solid point guard option.
Although Russell has never come off the bench, he could be a valuable addition as a starting point guard or a high-impact sixth man, especially if Beal misses time due to injury. For the Suns, Russell represents the best point guard option currently available, as evidenced by the Morris signing.
From the Lakers’ perspective, acquiring Nurkic would provide them with a capable backup center for Anthony Davis, while moving on from Russell could be beneficial. For the Suns, even though they might be light at the center position, players like Mason Plumlee and possibly Oso Ighodaro could fill in. This trade would also allow the Suns to clear Nurkic’s salary a year early, even if Russell might leave as a free agent next summer.
Both teams have roster issues and are not among the elite in the Western Conference at the moment. A trade could provide a fresh start for both Nurkic and Russell, potentially benefiting both teams if they’re willing to make the swap.
