Rashidi Yekini, a great Nigerian football player, was honoured with a Google Doodle on Monday in honour of his 60th birthday

Yekini, also known as the Goalsfather, was well-known for his ability to score goals

Yekini was born in Kaduna, Nigeria, on October 23, 1963

His remarkable journey from a difficult upbringing filled with homelessness and poverty to football glory is well celebrated

Motivated by his love of football, Yekini first worked as a mechanic and welder before scouts took notice

He played for the Shooting Stars after joining his first football team, “UNTL FC,” in Kaduna in 1981. In 53 games, he scored an amazing 45 goals

Yekini became the first player from Nigeria to win the title of “African Footballer of the Year” in 1983 thanks to his outstanding goal-scoring prowess

He was instrumental in getting the Shooting Stars to the African Champions Cup finals the next year

Yekini represented football teams in Spain, Tanzania, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Greece, Portugal, and Switzerland in addition to Nigeria

Notably, when playing for the Portuguese team Vitória Setúbal, he won the Bola de Prata (Silver Ball) in the 1993–94 season as the league’s top scorer

Yekini was an important member of Nigeria’s national team, the “Super Eagles,” and he helped the side qualify for the 1994 World Cup

His famous victory pose, holding the net tightly with both arms and crying

Continuing his football career for over 14 years with the Super Eagles, Yekini participated in the 1998 World Cup, scoring a total of 37 goals in 58 games for Nigeria—a record for the most goals scored for the country
