DALLAS (AP) — Florida coach Paul Maurice just wanted to see his team play the kind of tough, physical hockey it has been playing all season. The three-goal comeback was really a bonus for the Eastern Conference-leading Panthers

Aleksander Barkov had two power-play goals and an assist, scoring the winning goal with 5:22 left, as Florida had a three-goal third period to beat the Dallas Stars 4-3 on Tuesday night

“We went through the first 30 minutes for sure, possibly two periods, we didn’t look the way we were supposed to look. It just wasn’t right, wasn’t hard enough,” Maurice said. “That’s all we needed in the third

It wasn’t about winning the game. …. To not have anything going on for two periods and then get to play hard the way we need to play, that’s a really important thing to carry with you

The winner came only seconds into a power play when Florida’s captain took a shot from the middle of the right circle, and the puck ricocheted off a Stars player in front of Matthew Tkachuk, who was at the side of the net ready to knock it in

Tkachuk did have two assists for the Panthers, who won for the 18th time in 21 games

That included the tying goal with six minutes left when he sent a puck toward the net and Sam Bennett had his stick in the air to deflect it past All-Star goalie Jake Oettinger

That came only 38 seconds before the second goal by Barkov, who scored on another power play only 3 1/2 minutes before his winner

Carter Verhaeghe and Brandon Montour also each had two assists for Florida

Jason Robertson, Wyatt Johnston and Joe Pavelski each had a goal and an assist for the Central Division-leading Stars, who had their season-best five-game winning streak snapped

“For us, I think this group, this might come at a good time as far as this is a great reminder of what’s ahead of us,” Pavelski said

“We’re going to be in this situation again against good teams. … Take this as a lesson

This won’t be a low point for us long. We’ll be looking to right it and be better next time

Panthers goalie Sergei Bobrovsky hadn’t allowed more than two goals sine Jan

19, but his personal 12-game stretch ended when Robertson and Johnston scored 23 seconds apart in the second period to put Dallas up 3-0. But Bobrovsky stopped 27 shots, many of those prime scoring chances for the Stars in the first period and a few minutes late when they had an extra skater on the ice

“I liked big parts of our game tonight. I thought we did a lot of things well,” Stars coach Pete DeBoer said. “We had opportunities to really extend the lead and put them away

I thought their goalie let them hang around and

We left the door open, a crack for them in the third period, took a couple of penalties, and that’s all they need

Florida’s first goal was Sam Reinhart’s 46th, the second-most in the NHL

He popped the puck over Oettinger’s left shoulder on a power play midway through the second period

Barkov’s first power-play tally came on a 40-foot wrister with 8:51 left

The Stars led 3:19 into the game after Robertson assisted Pavelski’s goal on a clear breakaway

Robertson extended his points streak to seven games, matching his longest of the season, with his 23rd goal and 44th assist

Rangers outlast Hurricanes 1-0 thanks to Igor Shesterkin’s second straight shutout
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Igor Shesterkin made 28 saves for his second consecutive shutout, and the Rangers beat the Carolina Hurricanes 1-0 in a matchup of the top teams in the Metropolitan Division on Tuesday night

Adam Fox scored late in the first period, and that goal held up through Carolina using an extra skater for the final two minutes

Carolina goalie Pyotr Kochetkov stopped 23 shots, but the Hurricanes’ three-game winning streak ended in the final regular-season meeting with the Rangers, who have a six-point lead with 17 games remaining. New York won the season series 2-1

The Hurricanes were shut out for the second time this season and the first time since Oct. 24 at Tampa Bay

It came two nights after Carolina’s season high in goals in a 7-2 rout of Calgary

Shesterkin blanked St. Louis on 26 shots Saturday and now has three shutouts this season

Forward Jake Guentzel made his Hurricanes debut less than a week after he was acquired in a trade with Pittsburgh, recording one shot on goal in a little more than 15 minutes

Guentzel, who had 52 points (22 goals, 30 assists) in 50 games with the Penguins this season, had been out since Feb. 14 because of an upper-body injury

Fox’s 11th goal of the season came with eight seconds left in the first period when the puck deflected off the skate of Carolina defenseman Brady Skjei and slid under Kochetkov

Chris Kreider and Ryan Lindgren had the assists

The Rangers were without center Matt Rempe, who started a four-game suspension announced before the game

The punishment stemmed from an elbow to the head of New Jersey’s Jonas Siegenthaler on Monday

Rangers’ Matt Rempe suspended four games for elbowing Devils’ Jonas Siegenthaler
Following an altercation in the second period of the Rangers’ 3-1 win over the Devils on Monday night, New York’s Matt Rempe has been suspended for four games after he elbowed New Jersey’s Jonas Siegenthaler in the head

Rempe has quickly become a fan favorite who has taken the NHL by storm for the amount of fights he’s gotten into since making his debut in mid-February

However, his hit on Siegenthaler took it to another level as he appeared to extend his elbow and make contact with Sieganthaler’s head on purpose in the final seconds of the second period

Sieganthaler, a six-year veteran in his fourth season with the Devils, immediately went down after getting hit and had to leave the game

After the game, New Jersey’s Kurtis MacDermid came to the defense of his teammate and had some choice words for the rookie, expressing his disapproval of the situation

“There’s a right way to go about things and a wrong way,” MacDermid said

“I kind of lost a lot of respect for him

Up until that point, Rempe – standing at a towering 6-foot-7 – had been in a few fights during his early NHL tenure, but nothing that was out of line or over the top. The hit on Sieganthaler, who did not return for the rest of the contest, was different

In fact, the Department of Player Safety mentioned in their explanation that Sieganthaler’s injury played a factor in their decision

It’s also possible it took into account how eventful his first 10 games in the NHL have been so far

“Rempe chooses to flare his elbow both up and away from his body in dangerous fashion, driving it directly into the head of Siegenthaler with substantial force,” the DoPS explained

Rempe will be eligible to return on Tuesday, March 19 when the Blueshirts host the Winnipeg
