The Dallas Cowboys and quarterback Dak Prescott don’t see eye to eye on a contract extension.
“There’s no question Dallas wants Prescott to stay at quarterback,” wrote Jon Machota of The Athletic. . .
“But the team wants to make a deal that doesn’t reset the QB market.”
Prescott, who is entering the final year of his four-year, $160 million contract, reportedly wants a $60 million deal. ,
making him the highest paid player in the NFL. That would be the boss.
According to Spotrac, his market value is a four-year contract worth $50.8 million per year.
The problem for the Cowboys is that Prescott has the upper hand in contract negotiations.
He has a no-trade and no-tag clause in his contract.Extending the three-time Pro Bowler saves $26.2 million in cap space.
Dallas was able to use it to re-sign wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and linebacker Micah Parsons.
According to the OTC, Dallas is $10.6 million over the cap.
The Cowboys could use one of the void years on Prescott’s contract (2025 and 2026) to save $18.5 million, but that decision comes with risk.
The 30-year-old, who finished second in MVP voting last season, will attract suitors when he becomes a free agent in 2025.
“We don’t have to, but we can if everybody wants to do it,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said recently of the new deal, via Machota.
“If you can’t, what we have will work. So obviously if you do it one way, it gives you an opportunity to work differently in another team.
You can’t plan for it until you see where you are.” . That’s what we do.”But Jones and Co. should be more proactive.
Dallas has the 24th overall pick in the draft, meaning he won’t find a replacement.Sporac founder Michael Ginnitti suggested the Cowboys offer Prescott a three-year, $175 million contract with the biggest league signing bonus.
