Aston Villa look set to miss out on one of the reported goals after their Premier League rivals plucked it from under their noses.

Brentford have beaten Aston Villa and Celtic to sign Iceland goalkeeper Haakon Valdimarsson, according to reports.

According to the Telegraph, the Bees have agreed a fee for the 22-year-old, who plays club football for Swedish club Elfsborg.

Villa almost went out the window to close early but it was Wasps who provided the momentum.

The Swedish sensation is set to sign a permanent deal once his treatment is completed and his fee will be in the region of £2.6m.

He was the most expensive goalkeeper in Allsvenskan history and is currently the club’s record sales for Elfsborg.

Aston Villa had opened five days earlier but it was less than Brentford would pay and Copenhagen from Denmark also moved.

Valdimarsson himself reacted to the transfer rumours: “It’s a big deal. They are the best club in the Premier League and they are playing very well.

I’m glad you’re interested. “It’s proof that he performed well last season.”But Valdimarsson is moving to west London and his path to becoming Brentford’s number one goalkeeper could be clear.

He will now provide competition for Mark Flecken and back-up goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha, who was brought in to replace David Raya, who moved to Arsenal.

Villa have World Cup winner Amy Martinez as their starting goalkeeper and are currently trialling Robin Olsen.

Third choice Philip Marshall has moved to MK Dons on a six-month loan.

It will be interesting to see how Unai Emery and Villa’s transfer squad react when they miss one of their goals by switching to another goalkeeper.
