Why Oklahoma TE and Under Armor All-American Davon Mitchell would play for Joe John Finley

After reclassifying to join the Sooners’ 2024 signing class, four-star tight end Davon Mitchell said he’s ready to work in Norman.

ORLANDO – Davon Mitchell was a top target for Brent Venables and Oklahoma in the 2024 recruiting class.

Mitchell began his career at Allen High School (TX) alongside four-star quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. before moving to Los Alamitos, California.

Mitchell ultimately committed to OU, announcing in early July that he would reclassify for the 2024 cycle, saying he wanted to start his college career early.

“I’m really excited and the great thing is I can go out there early and learn the playbook,” Mitchell told the AllSooners.

“We have time between now and spring to get everything in order.”

Despite being one of the youngest players in Under Armour’s All-American practice, the quarterback was surprised to learn that Mitchell, despite his impressive size and athleticism, was only a senior in high school.

Mitchell played with Bixby coach Lauren Montgomery on Team Fire in Orlando and looked strong as a blocker and pass catcher.

As a 6-foot-4, 245-pound athlete, Mitchell’s speed and agility are evident when running down talented tackles.

Mitchell played primarily at tight end this week in Montgomery, but the early signee looks good in space and can easily play at the line of scrimmage.

When Mitchell originally committed to the Sooners, former offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby was still running plays in Norman.

But after Levy announced his retirement, Mitchell took to social media to confirm his commitment and tell OU fans that he’s keeping his promise.

Shortly after Lebby’s departure, Oklahoma coach Joe John Finley was named offensive coordinator along with former North Texas analyst and head coach Seth Littrell.

After the second day of Under Armor All-American practice, Mitchell told the AllSooners he was excited to be promoted to his new head coaching position.

“It felt good because as an offensive coordinator it’s good to have a tight ends coach,” Mitchell said.

“I’m excited for Coach Joe John Finley and Coach Littrell, because some good things are going to happen for us.”

Mitchell also said he is excited to rekindle his relationship with Hawkins, his former teammate at Allen High School.

Hawkins spent his senior season at Emerson High School in McKinney, Texas, where he led the Mavericks to the state semifinals.

“My dog Mike, I’ve been with him for a while. We have great chemistry and I can’t wait to get back on the court with him,” Mitchell said.

Like I said, if we had been together this year, we could have won state.

The Sooners’ lack of depth and experience could lead to Mitchell and Southeast Louisiana transfer Bower Sharp competing for a starting spot on the team late next year.

OU returns just two tight ends from their college careers. Blake Smith has two catches for 30 yards and Cade McIntyre has one catch for 26 yards this season.

Mitchell is an early enrollee and arrives in Norman on January 1st. This will give him extra time to adjust to college football life and prepare his body for SEC action.

If he gets a starting opportunity as a freshman, Mitchell will be competing against some of the best players in FBS football while being the same age as high school players across the country.

Despite his age, Mitchell has the skills and athleticism to make an impact for Oklahoma from day one.Follow AllSooners on Twitter for all the latest OU news!
