Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz is ready to give Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoa a bigger role in the Browns defense.

“As a young player, his step has been to learn his position first and he’s struggled a little bit, but he’s made good progress,” defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz said Thursday.
Last month, Owusu-Koramoa started growing. He has two sacks and two tackles for loss in his last four games and recorded his first interception on the Bears’ Hail Mary late in the first half on Sunday.
That’s partly because he’s more involved in the defensive package and because Schwartz has more responsibility in his role.
“He’s been playing at a very high level the last few months and we’ve been focused on getting him more involved,” Schwartz said. “
He has to do things he’s never done before, lead a team and do more when he has to do things he’s never done.
“Owusu-Koramoa has seen his defensive tackles grow. Only once in the first 10 games of the season did he play more than 80% of the snaps.
In the last four games, he played 90%, 86%, 93% and 86%. If the Browns had been more prepared last week, they would have had a chance to step into Anthony Walker’s role more.

“If A-Walk can’t play before the game, it might be a little too late to put Jeremiah in that role,” Schwartz said.
According to PFF, Owusu-Koramoa was drafted most often as a left tackle or left guard with 251 combined tackles.
He lined up 204 times on the right wing and 31 times in midfield.
Most importantly, wherever he lines up, he fits the type of linebacker Schwartz wants: an offensive lineman who can go down and clean up the mess the defensive line creates.
The next step for Owusu-Koramoa is to become a traditional linebacker who rarely leaves the field, and Schwartz believes he’s ready for that.
“You’re going to see Jeremiah take on the role for the third time,” Schwartz said. “It’s time for him to stay on the pitch for us.
A lot will be required of him, but he’s ready and an influential player for us.
